I was wondering if anyone here has ever experienced this? After 25 years of no issues today they suddenly started holding funds for a doesn't fit return request. I have always refunded with no issues in the past and they haven't held funds for returns for as long as I can remember. I put in for a call back to ask why and the rep claims it is going to be that way for everyone. If that is the case it would be nice if they went back to the pre covid amount of days for them to ship the return back.

I didn't see an increase in returns when I switched to Free, but of course it's possible for any seller. One of those 'other' benefits with Free Returns is, if they return the item in worse condition (like makeup or perfume showing that they wore the garment, or if the removed the tags) -then you can withhold up to 50% of the refund!

I was surprised and irritated to see my funds held for a remorse return recently too. But it would be even worse if I were still in clothes because from what I remember that was far more likely to be a return that never got shipped back, I guess just because clothes are a bit more of a hassle to ship than jewelry.
And I agree the long time window given to buyers is absurd, ESPECIALLY if they're going to hold seller funds all that time. It also feels like an extra slap in the face when you're doing exactly everything eBay wants you to, including being willing to pay for return shipping even for "just didn't like it" or "changed my mind."

Thank you for your reply! I read the boards daily but never post. I had been tempted to try free returns but not about to do it if they are holding funds. My sales crashed by 75% compared to last July also. I tried listing with my account I don't use much and I actually got more views and some sales again. This account seems like no views no matter what I try. And I know July is slow but another site thats usually slower actually beat by sales compared to here. So the slow down has to have some thing to do with all the changes they are working on I guess.

Ebay has held funds on Chargebacks, INRs & INADs since they brought Managed Payments sitewide in the summer of 2020 or whenever you actually entered Managed Payments.
I don't like it either. I've suggested many times that the seller's history should play a part in if Ebay has the need to even hold the funds on the seller.
However, once the claim is resolved, the hold is removed from the funds. In your case, once you refund the buyer, the funds will come off hold.

This was a return for a buyer not liking the way a clothing item fit them. For not liking fit or changing mind they haven't put a hold on my account in as long as I can remember. I refunded yesterday a different buyer that claimed they purchased my mistake and they never held the funds. It gets annoying because they took 27 days to figure out they didn't like the fit and then they get weeks to return. Thats why it was nice when they didn't hold the funds because some change their mind and don't wind up returning.

Well but then, by logic if they're going to hold the funds anyway, you might as well have free returns because it attracts more sales. There are other benefits too, but it sounds like just getting sales is your primary concern right now. -Note that Free Returns is a search refinement available to buyers. Any who check-mark that do not see your items in their search results. It's especially important for clothes because they don't get to try them on before buying. No matter how many measurements you show, there is no better way to tell if something fits RIGHT than trying it on.

I had been planning on trying free returns again, but the last time I did it seems like the amount out of returns went up even with having measurements listed. I have had buyers buy a new without tag item, wear it and do the free return. I have noticed alot of the larger sellers of new clothing have changed it to buyer pays return. I'm guessing once I get my inventory and sales up it will be easier to deal with. I slowed down when my son had to recover from surgery and it turned into 8 months so that messed my sales up. Just need to get going again.

I understand your concern, I don't disagree with you. I simply explained what Ebay does and how long they have been doing it.
They did hold funds on other INRs or INADs. You may not have noticed, but they do it all the same. It is likely you didn't notice because you are a good seller and take care of your buyers as quickly as you can. You just did your thing and it was over and then so was the hold.
Was that "purchased by mistake" an actual Return Request or a Cancellation request?

The return policies options are as follows.
With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request. Or if they want to, they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping. If the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.
On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return. Plus, if the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they use options 4 or 5 as their return policy.
On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns. If a seller that has either of those policies, they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return. A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping]. Also, Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below. In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.
ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception. Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.
All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!
14 day return policies are allowed in certain categories: Jewelry & Watches, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.
For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added protection benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.

What do you mean by a "few weeks". If it was past the MBG limit, which is 30 days, then while Ebay allows a buyer to open a Request for Return, a seller does not have to process it or accept the return for any reason. And if it was past the 30 days, that would be why your funds were not held.

Sorry I meant it was within my 30 day return policy. She had picked ordered by mistake which I thought was a weird option since she didnt open a return right away. I have been selling for about 25 years. Paypal used to hold funds in the beginning but stopped at some point. When ebay took over payment processing they didn't hold my funds. But I guess they are going back to doing it.

What date did you enter MP?
I can see you have been a long time seller. That is wonderful and I wish you much success.
