For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

We’ve all seen the rants. OH so many of them.

Today I got a charge back via the buyer’s credit card claiming that they did not recognize the transaction. It was shipped to the address on eBay’s screen and tracking confirms it has been delivered. So I opened the dispute and it said:

Your buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on Jul 08, 2023. This means that they disputed a charge directly with their payment institution. They are requesting $45.00 back and the reason for this dispute is that the buyer did not recognize the transaction.

The good news is that you’re protected for this dispute under eBay seller protection policy. We'll close this dispute once we receive the dispute outcome from the buyer’s payment institution. You're not required to take any action right now. If the buyer updates the dispute, we will let you know if any further action is required.

I don’t know if this will change anyone’s mind but for those who continue to rant that eBay does not protect sellers that statement is patently untrue.

And this isn’t the first time.

I haven't dealt with a charge back yet, but I think that's about the only one the seller has any chance of winning.

Glad to see they have a little seller protection on charge backs.

Have a great day.

There are others but this is the most common win, it's basically the same protection that PayPal offered. PayPal was better in that they covered with only proof of shipping rather than delivery also instead of "did not recognize" they used "fraudulent use".

People get the idea you can't win because the particulars of their situation are more often INR/NAD type chargebacks. They don't read the policy and seem to think that Seller Protection means you never lose a penny no matter what the reason.

For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

There are a few scenarios where sellers get automatic protections on payment disputes.

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/payment-dispute-seller-protections?id=5293

You'll notice how "not as described" disputes, unless they meet a few very specific criteria (buyer losing an MBG claim, buyer was already refunded), do not get seller protections and that's where the bulk of the complaints come in @richard1rst .

Well, I had a double scammy buyer who filed item not received with tracking showing delivered and item not as decribed from the same criminal ,trying to steal our merchandise and I won both with reimbursement from ebay.

You're not done yet, they can come back and take their money, if it was true that you are protected, they would have closed the case.

WOW.......... 5 stars for ebay on that informative explanation........!!!!!!  Certainly will help those who get that kind of chargeback and who, previously, had no idea what to do or what the possible outcome would be.......

Thanks for posting @richard1rst

@richard1rst   Thank you for posting ... if your schedule permits please post again once the dispute is completely closed by eBay ...

I am interested in two things:

-What the final decision is on the dispute

-How long it takes for the dispute to end

It is $45. eBay does not mind taking the loss. Cost of doing business. However if it was for $4500, I can assure you, you will get no help from eBay.

@mr_lincoln I've had a zillion of the same disputes that Richard posted. How long it takes to close? Anywhere between 1 week and 60 days. Outcome? Most of the time outcome is found in my favor, but even the instances where CC finds for the buyer, I'm still covered as the seller for those "don't recognize transaction" and "item not received" disputes where I have proof of delivery.

Here's the email text from the last one I had where buyer did not get a refund:

"A decision has been made about the dispute that was filed by [buyer name]. The dispute was found in your favor. You don't have to pay anything back and no further action is needed from you."

Thanks @wastingtime101

I figured the time could vary from card to card and dispute to dispute ... the last one i had was when PayPal was the Payment Processor, none so far with Managed Payments.

We'll close this dispute once we receive the dispute outcome from the buyer’s payment institution.

@richard1rst

Why do they make you WAIT for your funds to be released?  They make it sound like it is a 'done deal' but keep your money anyway for the duration.

Interest on that money - it's all about the money.

For the edification of those whose rants claim that eBay does not protect sellers.

those are good questions that I'm also wondering myself.

This why recent notice on June 30th from eBay:

Your buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on May 29, 2023. This means that they disputed a charge directly with their payment institution. They are requesting $xx.xx back and the reason for this dispute is that the buyer did not recognize the transaction.

The good news is that you’re protected for this dispute under eBay seller protection policy. We'll close this dispute once we receive the dispute outcome from the buyer’s payment institution. You're not required to take any action right now. If the buyer updates the dispute, we will let you know if any further action is required.

To look into this further, you can go to the payment dispute details page.

Just looking at the current details and this is what it still shows:

Received dispute

No response needed

Awaiting outcome

You’re protected for this dispute

The buyer filed a payment dispute with their payment institution directly.

The good news is that there's nothing you need to do because you're protected for this dispute through eBay's seller protection policy. We’ll close this dispute once we receive the outcome from the buyer’s payment institution.

According to eBay's Payments tab, the money is NOT on hold. There are some types of complaints where they do put a hold on the money, this is NOT one of them.
