So, fees went from 8% a few years ago to over 14%. And now there’s going to be another increase? What is the new fee??

I can still remember when combined fees for me were 7%
I was getting 10% off for a store
I was getting 20% off for being a TRS
at some point in time I was paying a discounted 4% to ebay and 2-3% or so to paypal
ebay just about doubled the FVF rates one year
I can still remember being so jealous of the guitar sellers when this happened
of course I am talking about the decade between 2000 and 2010
I was also getting the high roller the discount from paypal
I used to be a platinum seller, needed to sell 25,000 a month for that
oh well

Another thing sellers sometimes forget is that although FVF have risen over the years, other costs that they incurred have decreased.
In the "olden days," we were nickeled and dimed with separate charges for everything. (Some separate upgrade charges still exist, such as subtitle or listing in 2 categories there are far fewer than there were 20 years ago.)
What I do know is that my monthly invoice is hundreds of dollars LESS now (even with higher FVF) than it was 20 years ago.

In 2011, when eBay started charging final value fee on the buyer's entire payment including shipping, they set the FVF rate at 9% (for non stores, in most categories). Then in 2013 they raised that general rate to 10%, while sellers were still paying 29% to PayPal, so the rate in 2013 was net 12.9%.
I suppose at one time it might have been 8%, but that was before 2011.
Per today's announcement, the new rate in most categories, for non-stores, will be 13.25%. Most of your listings are in the Clothing category, where the rate was already 15% and will not be going up. You can look up the new rates for each category here:
https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/resources/seller-updates/2023-winter/financials
That's athletic shoes and handbags at 15% - the rest of clothing is at 13.25% for no store and starter store.
Regardless, the tiny fee hike is no deal breaker, unlike when they dumped the 5% media FVF and then eventually ran it up to 15%.

The 'FEE' for a store is well over 60%.
Buy a 'thingy' for $10 and sell it for $20, and net $4.
Building, Utilities, Payroll etc.
Average small business with 2 employees has a monthly overhead of $7k. They need to sell $14k in stuff just to break even.
Sitting in your dining room in your PJ's at 3 in the morning 'listing things' is much easier than owning a 'real' store.

- insertion fees were charged and they were based on the starting price of the auction. The higher the price of the item, the higher the fee.
- First picture was free but each additional picture after the first one incurred a 15 cent fee.
- There was an extra charge for adding BIN to an auction listing.
- Fees varied depending on the ending price of the sale with higher charges for items selling over $25
- Separate fees were paid to PP

I remember when one had to pay to have ONE photo in the listing!
My fees are down, too - when GTC came in I was at first a little concerned, then found it made no difference to my sales (or they even increased) but I saved $50/month going from premium store to basic because I got rid of all those little 5, 7 and 10 day relists. If I'd thought it through I would have dumped those long before and gone to GTC anyway.

Started selling in 2010 the standard FVF was 10% for eBay plus 2.9% +30 cents for PayPal.
Here are the current fees for eBay.
Yep things have changed - no more PayPal, and various fees for product category and sale amounts. Time changes every thing. Recall when a McDonalds hamburger was 15 cents and was good and cooked on a grill (no nuke box)+ real good french fries made from real potatoes all with decent service - for a while ya' had to stand out in the weather to order and pay and no drive-up. That all changed. Time will change everything. This '44 model saw a whole lot of changes many good some not so good.

its been a long time since they had a major increase in the FVF
the largest increase I ever remember was like an increase of 3-4% in the FVF
it was a major shock to most people but ebay said they were just aligning to industry standards
I guess it was between 2000 and 2010
I have been selling here since 98 so I can remember plenty of FVF increases

Walmart orders online the total charge ends up on the consumers bill, if they pay by card then the "Discount Rate" as they call it (discount? LOL) or commission better said of the transaction +.25 cents is charged to the merchant, no different.
Low ticket items the USPS along with the FVF is making it rather not worthwhile to sell the stuff here.

I did some digging and found a huge increase in 2008
auction FVF went up from 5.25% all the way up to 8.75%
that is a mighty steep increase of 3.5 %
I am unsure if we had to use paypal then or not

There were a lot of very big changes in 2008, including the policy that required sellers to accept PayPal and banning "paper" payments (checks, money orders, cash, etc.) later in the year.
Yes the FVF rate went up, but in those days there were no free insertions; we had to pay for every listing and every image. Under this fee revision, the insertion fees decreased and the fee for the Gallery image was eliminated.

Our longstanding local burger chain is still run that way. They've also always paid a good living wage and benefits for their employees so they stay on for years. AND they have hand dipped shakes. Nobody cares about standing in the rain to wait (they have canopies, though). Burgers, etc., are still reasonable (for this area).
The McDonald's stands mostly empty, but this place is always busy. I think that's a pretty good indication of how to keep a good thing!

Yes, I remember when I first started buying and selling on eBay, you had to go purchase a money order, unless you wanted to send cash or a check and mail it before the seller would ship. Added time to the whole process.
