Well, I've been selling on Ebay for about 3-4 months now. And each month I am shocked at what Ebay takes in selling costs. For the month of November, I sold $397 worth of items. Between taxes/government fees, Ebay fees (final value), account level fees and adjustments, and the real shocker, shipping labels, coming in at a whopping 113.00, I was left with $197.00!! 44% of my total sales went to COSTS! I posted on Mercari two large Christmas dolls, also posted on Ebay, which sold today for $104 for both, including shipping. My net will be approximately $86! I made a decent profit with minimal COST!! Does ANYONE know how to mitigate these outrageous fees? Especially with regard to the labels. For what I've been shelling out for labels I could have bought one of those high-end label printers so many of you suggested I not purchase. I don't know what to do. I've got over 200 new items I'd like to post, but if I'm going to keep getting hit like this, I think Mercari will serve me better.

Just be careful about cancelling your store depending on if you are month to month or yearly. Ebay will hit you with a cancellation fee if you are on yearly and you have a lot of months left on your contract.
There are pros and cons to having a store.
I've practically typed a novel to you already. You are probably tired of me by now. LOL...

Good luck to you too.
I don't know how I'm making money and having very satisfied buyers. I've had I think two or three returns in the last seven years since I restarted selling on ebay and both (or three) went ebay perfect.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong....
Can anyone clue me in?

@firesteel_surplus wrote: ... . What you are doing is calculated shipping. That is a different thing all together and you can actually set that up when you set up your sale. If I remember, you can add a handling fee into the shipping cost to cover shipping material (box and packing)...but keep it modest. Then a buyer can enter their zip, get a calculated shipping by whatever shipping you authorize and then they know exactly what it will cost to ship before they buy ...
The buyer doesn't have to enter their ZIP Code. eBay automatically calculates the postage based on the buyer's primary shipping address. I have looked at a few of the OP's listings and they all had been set up with calculated shipping.

I do not understand what "all in one place" versus "disbursed throughout eBay's site" even means. Even if a seller doesn't have a store subscription, a user can click on "View listings" or "See other items" at the top of one of the seller's listings, and see all of that particular seller's listings.
Usually the main deciding factors on a store subscription are (1) the number of free insertions that a seller wants/needs; and (2) potential savings through lower final value fee rates. Other benefits like organizing your listings into your own categories are nice benefits but would rarely be justification for paying for a store subscription.
As noted elsewhere, dropping the store subscription can incur a substantial "early termination fee" if you have set it up at the annual discounted rate rather than month-to-month.

We 'roughly' calculate this pretty simply. We take the amount that eBay tells us we sold and we compare it to what they actually deposited into our bank account.

You're giving advice to run from ebay.
You say you have a few more items to sell then you're "out of here".
What's stopping you from leaving NOW?

A label printer merely prints out the paper label that you purchase online. It will not have any impact on the cost of that postage. Buying labels online through ebay is much cheaper than buying postage at the post office.
That is true, but if you get a Thermal label printer, you will no longer have the cost of ink. This can be a real money saver on your shipping costs.

@richardwillardcollection wrote:That is what they do, they're very good at getting you to buy things on credit and selling just enough of your finer things and taking most of the money. All the time you think your doing good and you have hope when actualy your going into debt. It really is a willing scheme to steal your most prized possessions from you while you rack up thousands in debt, they put out false listings to make you thing what you have bought is worth more than you paid. I tell you its a scam, the whole thing on ebay is a scam, a ponzi scheme. I am sure of it. Now that you know, hows it feel? The worker go home and use their own computers and send you low ball offers because they know your desperate, and then resell your stuff on etsy.
This is simply not true if the seller does their job and stays informed on the selling fees of any given site. That is part of the Seller's job. You sell in categories that Ebay will charge you 12.9% up to 15% in selling fees. Shipping is not something Ebay is responsible for, the seller is. And the seller is responsible for pricing it appropriately.
So if Ebay is taking most of your money, then you aren't pricing your items correctly. There is no reason that would be Ebay's fault for a seller selling stuff at a loss. That would be on the Seller not pricing things correctly.
There is no requirement to accept low ball offers by anyone. If you don't like the offer, deny it. It isn't a complicated process.

@pwil-23 wrote:Sarcasm. I get it now. There is no such thing as a label printer that will reduce my shipping costs.
That is not true @pwil-23 . I use a Zebra ZP 450. I bought it used on Ebay years ago. It is a thermal printer which means it takes no ink to print stuff. Ink was a big cost to me, so this little investment paid itself off within the first year I had it. Labels on the roll are no more [maybe less] than other labels on the sheets.
So it is true that you can save money using a label printer as long as it is a thermal printer.

@farmalljr wrote:Also, after taking a quick peek at your store, it appears you are selling a fair amount of items with lower retail value. Meaning your shipping costs about what the item costs. So yes, your labels will be a big part of your "expense" in eBay's calculations. You should ignore that and the percentage you take home. Shipping is an expense, but it's not something you are "selling" I saw you use calculated shipping, so that is not really part of your selling "fees". The buyer is paying this, so they pay you, and you pay for the label. It's a wash, as far as accounting goes. Your money is made on the sale of the item.
Costs of labels. since buyers are paying for it, means nothing in your profits portion. Again, it's a wash. It's not really a cost to you.
I addressed this same issue with this poster. They have many things that they are not charging enough for the shipping costs and other things are OK. They simply need to pay more attention to the details and know the actual costs of the shipping to be able to fix their current issues.

sadly ebay increased the costs of the shipping supplies so one usually has to pay extra to use the coupon

Well that isn't completely accurate. Ebay does not auto refund buyers unless you have your account set up to allow that. Otherwise you have 2-3 days to respond to a claim filed by a buyer. So without knowing the specifics as to what happened to you, there is no way to tell what actually happened and why Ebay found the need to step in and take care of the buyer.

Great point. I might add it would be in @pwil-23 best interest to read through the TOS regarding having a Store.
