Hi! I'm trying to sell a high ticket ring (wedding ring) for the first time. I listed it last night, marked it up 30% for the BIN price. This morning, I receive an email saying the item has sold for the BIN price of $9,100.00. The buyer has good reviews but it seems that most of the items he has purchased could be cheap items. Anyway, the buyer is asking for an invoice and says he will transfer the money via PayPal as soon as he gets the invoice. I know I need to request signature confirmation and delivery confirmation. Any advice?!

Now...once again my post was to the original post ONLY and only addressed the original post...and only said what it did and not other things that people added in.
Ebay discovering the buyer's account was "hacked" was a lucky thing as if they had not the transaction would to have had to be completed. It was not a known scam....the buyers account was "hacked" which is the only reason it was not allowed to continue and the transaction cancelled.
I am also very glad for the OP that ebay discovered this so quickly and it was not allowed to proceed....and I am also glad for the buyer who's account was hacked.

if You think any business can prevent crime you’re crazy. Every store has shrinkage. eBay can only protect one side and that is the layman not the pro.

The buyer wanted to pay directly with PayPal rather than paying through eBay to PayPal.
this is a well-known scam. The buyer would then send a fake PayPal email saying that they had paid.
Then if the seller had not actually checked their PayPal account to see if they have been paid or not they would have probably ship the item without ever having been paid.
Please stop arguing about eBay invoices, and pay attention to the fact that this is a well-known scam.
honestly I wonder if you're just more upset over the fact that people told you that your advice was incorrect than the real issue, which is the buyer was definitely trying to scam the seller, as stated by eBay.

ANd there is this which also may be helpful to explain how getting paid on ebay works

When you accept payment through PayPal, your buyers pay directly to your PayPal account.
Through. eBay. Checkout.

We see this scam daily. As far the hijacked account the OP says it had feedback for cheap purchases so whether or not it was hacked was irrelevant.

"Your buyers pay directly to your paypal account"....proving it is merely a gateway page
Buyers are transferring money from their account to the sellers paypal account.
Ebay even tell you the buyer is paying DIRECTLY to the sellers paypal account....they cannot make it any more clear.

No it is not irrelevant...it is what it is and now a fact...buyers account was hacked.
And let me explain something...I buy very little a few cheap things here and there and I am very much allowed to buy something expensive if I chose as is every other buyer..as long as I can pay for it I am allowed to purchase it.......that doesn't make me or anyone else a scammer...and we all can ask for an invoice and it happens regularly on higher end sales....I know because I have sold higher end items for a very long time as have lots of other sellers.......ebay allows it and provides a way for it to be done. Again doesn't make it a scam.

They wanted to pay through PayPal not through the eBay payment gateway to PayPal.
That is the classic m/o of a scammer.

If it’s a low purchase account it doesn’t matter if it’s a scammer on a hacked account or a scammer on a low feedback created account, it’s still the same scam.
this isn’t about you
in fact I was trying to explain that this is an obvious textbook scam and the buying account is irrelevant. But feel free to continue to argue about things I didn’t say.

As long as the sale was done on ebay...it is allowed and has been acceptable and done for years. ..and still is for many reasons including famous ebay glitches etc etc. Remember paypal was owned by ebay and is still under contract with ebay to act the same as before the sale. Either way the money goes directly to your paypal account and there is a record of the payment attached to the transaction...as paypal allows invoices for ebay items.

Paypal was owned by eBay but operated separately, just like eBay enterprise. It was never integrated into the eBay company.

You can create invoices for ebay items in paypal...always could and for a reason...and it is allowed. All ebay cares about is the sale is done on ebay and there is a record of the payment which is through paypal and always has been...the money is and always has been done through paypal between the buyer and the seller. The gateway page is a convenience but it is paypal..not ebay, it is merely on ebay. Ebay does not and never has handled the money end of a transaction and will not until they become a processor.
Ebay tell you this and you are still ignoring it...I provided the link that says it

This has nothing to do with learning the hard way or not.
Please understand that while you may be here for a different reason, the OP is here to get HELP and 99% of the responders on this thread are here to give them that HELP. It is rather annoying when others come in and try to thwart our attempts to help whether it be intentional or unintentional.
