Excepting checks

Buyer wants to send a check for payment. Then arrange pickup after check clears bank. Thoughts.

If the shipping details have No Shipping Local Pickup Only you can accept a check (and cash and money order) but you can't require one of those methods because then that would be taking the option away for the buyer to pay with an electronic method.

Better is a USPS Money Order. They can be cashed at the PO no waiting.

Beware: USPS money orders are faked too. Only accept if you can take it (with the buyer) to a post office so they can validate and cash it.

I assume it'd be a cashier's check instead of a personal check. Or if it's doable, can do the exchange at his bank.

Been wondering about checks myself though.... Have seen it as an option when doing listings. Seems quaint. But also slow and more prone to fraud.

I suppose you'll have their info (I'd ask for ID) so you can always come after them should the need arise.

If the buyer uses a bad check, I'd bet any ID they provide will also be bad.

Have a great day.

Re: Excepting checks

Except means "other than".

The word you want is "accept", to allow or agree.

Sorry, a life spent proof reading makes one twitchy.

Yeah. Recall them being real popular on the gun boards a decade or so ago because people were under the belief that it'd be a federal offense to counterfeit them. At least half the guns bought online were probably paid with USPS money orders because of that belief.

Think some said federal thing is not true though. No idea who is right. Only real benefit is they can be cashed at most or all post offices.

Scammer.

Payment outside of ebay.  Report buyer. Block buyer.

It's a motorcycle.  Checks are OK.  Buyer comes to view item.  If he decides he wants it, pays.  If not, simply walks away.

Re: Excepting checks

For the record, for certain categories, checks are allowed. This includes eBay Motors> Motorcycles. For a complete list, see link below to the eBay Payment Methods policy:

Re: Excepting checks

Nope.  Those days are long gone on eBay.  I remember money orders... If they can send a check or give you a check they can pay with a debit card on eBay

Re: Excepting checks

Yes a debit card can be considered as an "e-check", since it draws from the holder's bank balance.

But like a check, if something goes wrong with the transaction, the buyer cannot easily get their money refunded.

Ditto payments funded with Paypal balances or with gift cards. And e-transfers, if those are available in the USA yet.

Once the seller has the money, the seller has the money.

Re: Excepting checks

suspension of your account is bad.

its a scam imho, bc they can just report the physical check stolen/lost etc. so easily through their bank, & my suspicion is that they are trying to avoid an electronic trail which they cannot fight as easily as a paper one.

also, it leads me to ask is the check even theirs? why a physical check & not where they are forced to use their own info to use it.

tell them to add their checking account to paypal, then use that...this is so odd to me! bc you HAVE to ask yourself, why wouldnt they just simply add their checking and routing number to paypal where it is safe & easy?

& even if they where really old, their able to use the ebay site, ebay email you, & they also had enough technical knowledge to make the ebay account.

something is amiss. why cant they use paypal, what did they do? these are the questions you need to ask yourself.

I'm not, I was just curious if anyone does. I told them PayPal or cash. Seems like eBay has turned into just another outlet for scammers. Probably my last listing on ebay,to much of a hassle. Seems like eBay has turned into disfunctional family combination between Facebook marketplace and Amazon.

i have never trusted checks, & i will never trust checks. a checking account added to paypal is stupid easy, im disabled & figured it out. lol as long as you prepare yourself & not ever stray from your own safe terms, then you will be fine.

imho, anyone who ever asks if they can pay you with paper checks or gift cards is not honest, & they can easily cash the check at their own bank for free/why didnt they just do that in the first place, if they where honest?

ebay motors might be different, but my point still stands to just be aware.💖✌🏻🌺
