I wonder if they really wanted my input or just gathering demographic info. Hey little ebay boys, you don’t ask a woman her age, much less require that she answer! Where y’all from? LOL. Sorry, but that just struck me funny. And of course I just exited out of it at that point. Do they never stop with the intrusions? Ebay: you are a vendor, not our employer. Requiring that answer is a crock.

As with many things in life, participation is not mandatory, and backing out is a viable option, so you were not required to answer.

I didn't think employers could ask your age either.

Was it a faux paus for me to have started this thread back then?

Exactly! I've been getting these survey phone calls and it is all automated ... I finally decided to answer their questions ... is anyone in your house over the age of 50? 1 for yes 2 for no .... I hit 2. Then it asks if anyone in the house is under 25? 1 for yes 2 for no ... I hit 1. Both times a lie ... I'm 78 but it immediately opted me out of all their surveys and took me off their mailing list .. LOL.

Being a former statistics nerd, this type of a question, generally, helps analysts determine differences in response based on age. It can be a helpful stat. Of course, it could also be used to discriminate against you. Or, they might use your age to toss you out of the pile because they are focused on one particular demographic. I wouldn't be that offended by it, but each to their own. If it's offensive, backing out and not completing the survey is exactly what I'd do. Age doesn't bother me as much as the income question does.

I understand its purpose (retired magazine publisher). What I object to is that it is required in order to complete the survey.
If ebay was smart enough, they'd be able to pull your birthday from your account settings. Yes, we had to enter our birthday when we registered. I forgot about that until CS I called asked me for my birthday.

Your question was fine. It was fun and no one had to answer. Some told the truth, some lied, some declined to answer. I can’t remember if I answered or not but let’s just say I’m closer to 60 than I am 50. A lot closer to 60. 😂😂
If I remember correctly you are an ancient 4-0. Ha ha ha! I’ll trade ya!

I've had the same experience with surveys and eBay surveys and did the same thing you did (didn't complete the survey).
Some limited personal information can be asked, including age range (not specifically what age you are), but there should always be an option to select "Prefer Not to Answer." Any competent Marketing Agency administering the survey should know this. It's either an inept Marketing Agency or eBay is instructing them to collect the personal data.
eBay surveys should be focused on us as Customers and what we think about our experiences, and age has nothing to do with that.
If they rolled out a survey to all members today, they would see how poorly they're doing as a company.

I’d spent time and energy answering all of their relevant questions; to not let me complete the survey without answering my age is more waste of my time.
So, just give your age then and your time won't be wasted, what's the big deal?
My wife is proud to tell anyone that she's almost 60, and she's also proud to tell anyone that she's married to me.
