Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Yeah, this is now the third time this has happened to me. I made an offer to prospective buyers for an item, checked to make sure the right amount was listed (in this case $140), and sent it out. Then apparently ebay sent the offer at $14!  So obviously someone bought it right away and paid for it. I sent a message to the buyer explaining the situation, and now have to wait and hope this person is understanding and will cancel the order.  I called the ebay "help" line, and was told that if the buyer does not agree then I should just send it for $14.  Not gonna happen - I would take about $150 loss on this transaction, as I was already asking for less than I paid originally.  I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem.  Ebay of course claims that they've never heard of this before (even though I've reported it twice before already).

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Yep, we figured out with any offers that go out we always put cents on it to make sure we hit the ".". It is too easy to type 14.0 thinking it was 140 so we always would type 140.04 or something like that. It is a brain thing, forcer your brain to think and mistakes rarely happen. Do something out of habit and bingo mistake made. If this was a glitch there would be tens of thousands of complaints - odds are human error. Some can never admit they are not perfect and do not know everything. A strong smart person admits their failures, a weak not so bright person blames others for their own failures. Basic human nature just like the sound of lightening and the brightness of thunder.

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Thanks for the tag @pburn there's no known issue currently where the offer amount is off. If you cancel for the wrong reason like "problem with buyer's address" your account can be actioned for circumventing the cancelation flow.

The OP should reach out to CS, if there's a known issue at the time then we will work with them to make sure it doesn't impact them negatively. Thanks!

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Thanks for all the feedback.

The first time I figured it was a typo on my part, so I decided to be more careful in the future and check/confirm the amount before sending.  The second time I was sure I'd sent the correct offer amount but thinking I may have flaked out anyway continued to use this feature.  I do send out a lot of offers too, and have noticed sometimes the last digit of the amount I type in gets dropped - so I cancel and do it again.  It's not just a lag, that last digit just never gets picked up.  However, this time when I put in my number the sent offer amount stayed completely blank...I cancelled, did it again, and the number was correct.  But just to be sure I checked after sending to see if the amount was right on that offer.  And it was!  Yet somehow the recipient got a $14 offer instead of $140.  So - definitely not a typo.  At this point I will no longer be sending offers.  It may even be my own computer and not ebay that is introducing the error, but either way it is not worth it.

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

There was an issue last month where the ads team confirmed a bug was not allowing certain numbers or a decimal point to be entered in ad rates.

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Advertising-Dashboard-Bug-Nothing-below-5-can-be-entered-in/m-...

While this could certainly be a typo situation, it also could possibly be a bug similar to that one.

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Just a suggestion................that's not "proof" in the legal sense, but might help in reporting.........  take a screen shot of the offer before submitting it............,   easy to delete the jpgs if nothing goes wrong........

I use this feature extensively & have since it was available.  I sent 250 offers over the last few days.  I have NEVER had the amount be wrong unless I either made a typo OR I forgot to change the percentage/amount dropdown.  BEWARE the dropdown RETAINS the last one you used!  For me, I found the way to avoid problems with it is to never change it.  I ONLY use amount, so I don't make a mistake.

I do use a PC most of the time, but have also used the app quite a bit & never an error with either one, that could not be traced back to me.   This one screams of either a typo or a case where there is a lag from keyboard to screen.

I too send offers pretty regularly on certain types of items - not 250 + in 3 days....but about that many a month.

Have never experienced what the OP describes, but I always use my laptop, never the mobile app.

Doesn't it have you confirm the amount before you send it??  Need to go look closer at the total process on screen.

If this is the 3rd time, I would hold off on any offers for a while.

Yes, you have the opportunity to confirm, but if you're on a roll, it's easy to go too fast.  Plus that screen (as well as some of the other Ebay screens) has a significant lag on how quickly it populates.

I don't normally send that many in 3 days, they had stacked up b/c I was on vacation & couldn't send them during vacation b/c my Time Away would not apply to items I'd sent offers on 😞

That sounds like NUMLOCK may not have been on.  Of course I can't see your keyboard & navigation for data entry, so just a thought.

Re: Ebay sending wrong offers to buyers

Thanks again everyone.

I do always add the ".00" to any offers, but I do often see that the full amount does not populate.  I believe that the first 2 times this is what happened - I sent the offer without the complete amount showing on the right (below the current full listed price).  Although sometimes the last digit or 2 doesn't show at all and I have to cancel and redo the offer.  Plus I always check now after I've sent, to make sure the right offer amount was indeed processed.  What was weird this time is I DID check and it showed the amount I had typed ... yet somehow someone got the $100 discounted offer!

In any case, the buyer was very understanding and let me cancel with no consequences.  And the folks at ebay were very helpful when I called with this problem too.  But it really does seem like there is some kind of glitch which happens only very rarely (so far 3 times out of thousands of offers sent).

Thanks for posting this, I was about to make a post myself (with a screen shot, but I sent the offer too fast to catch it).

The other day I had a 24.99 item I wanted to offer for $19.00. Sure enough, I put $19.00 in. I checked this. I noticed on the right hand side eBay only registered $1.00 and that's what it's going to send out. I erased my offer and retyped it in, and then it seemed to work fine.

A little while ago I sold a coin for $5 that had an ounce of silver in it and was beating myself up for making such a terrible typo and practically giving it away. My experience mentioned above is proof that I typed it right, but the SYSTEM did not recognize what I typed in.

This is probably what happened to you.

That's a tough one.

It's a GLITCH. If I wasn't so busy I would have screen shot my entry of 19.00 which was correct and eBay recognizing it as $1.00. (Of course I could see that on the right hand side when it showed me what it thought my offer was).

I came very close to having a screen shot of proof that eBay does not necessarily recognize everything you type in the offer field. I put in 19.00 and eBay thought I put in 1.00. I saw it on screen, but I'm working 80 hours a week and don't have time to collect evidence of eBay's glitches.

There is nothing wrong with making a mistake or a typo.  We all do it.  Even me.

Because I witnessed proof that eBay's site is the one that messed up. I thought I made typos too, and now I'm starting to rethink it. The moral of the story is to check what eBay registers as what you put in, and not rely on the fact that what you put in is the offer that is going to go out.

Tell you what, next time I see it (and I send 30 offers a day), I will post a screen shot that your site does not recognize all the characters I inputted into the offer field.

There is a glitch, it's happening to way too many people in here, and if I wasn't so busy working I would have posted a screen cap as proof that there is actually a glitch.

I'm sure it will happen again, I send out the wrong offer every once in a while, but now I'm not so sure it's my typing that's off.

One of those cases where I guess it's good I do by percentage and not an actual dollar value.

But I've seen something similar to that on the right side too. Like it doesn't register the keystroke and update the value on the right. Although, sometimes it seems to be delayed by a few seconds. Which admittedly seems weird unless it's checking the price on the server. But would usually 'fix' it by typing something and then erase it so it will update.

So 20 becomes 20.1 and back to 20.
