Ebay's Advertising

I don't watch TV at all, but I did watch some youtube the other day. For the first time I saw a non-automotive ebay add, for fashion stuff. Is it just me, or is that add kind of 80s? I mean really you could see the same kind of advertising 40 years ago. I think this is not just ebay, but wow, glad I stay away from this stuff.

The advertising industry really has gone stagnant!

Re: Ebay's Advertising

EBay is making an effort. I hope it pays off and they continue.

Been hearing radio ads on news radio KRLD 1080 am out of Dallas when in the vehicle.

@worldcoinauctions ,

Ebay spends more than a billion dollars a year in marketing. I hear adds on the radio, they are major sponsors at Comic Con every year, National Sports Collectors convention, Fanatics Fest, and many other traded show.

They also give away swag at the shows they sponsor.

I see their adds on Facebook, and many trading card websites.

Re: Ebay's Advertising

All I see this side of the pond is the "It's now free to sell on ebay" ad on the telly.

It's a bit disingenuous to say the least, as it only applies to "private" sellers. Even then with the new payment holds and the soon to be "Simple Delivery" the fees have just become more indirect.

Re: Ebay's Advertising

I personally was happy to see the new advertising for vintage fashion. I don't really like the music for the ads though. But, the ad is easily identified when in another room by the music (at least around here).  It kind of sticks to your brain......

Re: Ebay's Advertising

Well a lot of people have cut the cord and really don't watch much tv anymore. Ebay does have advertisement which is on tv as well. At least it give certain people the thought that Ebay is still around. I have some friends who thought Ebay no longer exist. They are on the older side but still purchases from sites like Amazon. Which is why it is important for Ebay to maintain what they have.

Re: Ebay's Advertising

There are a lot of people who collect vintage clothing.  I think the ad was to point out that eBay is a fun place to look for vintage clothes.

If eBay cannot manage to put together a functioning website with a buyer-friendly display, how on earth can it be expected to excel at advertising?

eBay seller since 1999. This is a posting ID.

Re: Ebay's Advertising

One of eBay's TV ads I saw was for automotive stuff.  I can't remember all the details but it basically said you can get the part you need and it is guaranteed to fit.  I have read a lot of posts on this board about parts dealers having to take returns because the buyer didn't know the correct part to buy and they ended up breaking or tearing up the part trying to make it work.  That ad (to me, and I say this from a seller's perspective) is telling the buyer, "go ahead and buy it; if you break it or tear it up trying to make it fit, the seller has to eat it."  Of course, that's true in all categories.

@pickapaper

The auto ads make me wince.... and probably it's because 1) "I have read a lot of posts on this board about parts dealers having to take returns because the buyer didn't know the correct part to buy and they ended up breaking or tearing up the part trying to make it work", and 2) I'm a big fan of local b&m parts houses.

I did find the one about vintage clothing to be a breath of fresh air. I waited on that one for years (while I was selling vintage clothing) and finally wrote off waiting... on that one, I mean. Oddly, it started to air about 2 months after I quit selling. 🤣

Re: Ebay's Advertising

@mtgraves7984 "pre loved" clothing , especially designers/high end, is a "focus category" now. So now ebay is willing to put some money into marketing it. but ebay is still not willing to market the site itself, much less create a Holiday Marketing Campaign for the whole site.

If you sell in a Focus Category, you get the marketing meal. If you don't, you get whatever table scraps fall to the floor LOL
