I sold a book. It was bought 6/28 and delivered to him on 7/1. He immediately requested a return citing condition. Okay. No problem. I give 30 day seller paid returns. I accepted return and did the postage for him. The returned never showed that he shipped it back. A few days ago 7/29 Ebay sent me a message and said they closed the return because they yhad no record of him shipping it back. Okay. Then today 8/1 I received it back. He shipped it after they closed the return.
How do I handle this? It's $100+ book. The honest thing to do is to refund $$ to him. But, if Ebay closed the return I won't get my fees back, etc. Will Ebay refund to him? I don't want to refund and then Ebay refund as well if he complains.
On another note, he is a book dealer and I think he buys for 'speculation' and if it doesn't sell . . . well. I don't know for sure.
Your thoughts.

interesting situation for sure.
I really don't have the answer, but I see your issue.
If you refund and then eBay refunds, does that mean eBay tries to draw funds from you? Could that be a double refund to buyer and a double loss for you?
Was the book returned with no issues and looks to be same book you sold?
Maybe just let it ride for now. Seems the buyer failed to ship per eBay return policies which is already a too generous time frame.
I'm sure others will chime in with their knowledge and experience.

Does the return label tracking show it was shipped and delivered? I know how I would handle it but every seller is different so what tracking shows could be a big part of how you handle it.

You can contact the buyer and explain the situation to him. Tell him you will refund him minus the eBay fees because them book arrived after the cased was closed. In such cases, I think it is okay to request the buyer's PayPal address to send him the refund.

@bill.purvis2012
Can you still do a partial refund through the transaction?
I wouldn't be sending any PayPal money.
If you can refund via the transaction, do a partial subtracting the fees, return shipping costs to you, and some more "just because of the PIA factor" ????

I recently had a Case closed in my favor. I made an insurance claim and after I was paid, I reimbursed the Buyer by issuing a refund through eBay.
I shipped the item on April 9th and issued a refund on June 25th. eBay will let you issue a refund for a while. I am not sure how far back eBay will let you do a refund through their system. It is close to 90 days.
I looked at my sales and one for May 11th I can still give a refund but one on May 5th the ability to give a refund is gone.

Yes. It does show shipped on 7/29 and received by me today, 8/1.

I wouldn't want to do anything outside of Ebay. . .

If Ebay closed the case, it's closed and they shouldn't refund.
Since you got it back, I'd refund item price minus your fee's.
