I received a negative feedback the other day.
Technically, for me, it's no big deal, as I am fully aware I cannot please everyone. The buyer is entitled to their opinion, even though I believe their opinion is 100% wrong.
What frustrates me, however, is this buyer has left FIVE negative feedbacks in the past couple of months, verses leaving only ONE positive feedback during the same period of time. The last FOUR feedbacks she left were all negatives.
In all feedbacks left, this buyer leaves a negative about 40% of the time.
40% NEGATIVE FEEDBACKS LEFT !!!
I hate to point out the obvious to ebay, but this so-called "buyer" is nothing but a CONSTANT COMPLAINER.
I sincerely believe if a "buyer" leaves more than 10% negative feedbacks, they should be disallowed from leaving feedback at all.
Ebay, start tracking the negative feedback left on YOUR SYSTEM.

You may not like hearing this, but in your case she had a perfectly valid complain.

I beg to disagree. I don't think it was a valid reason. You get mail everyday with all kinds of things you may not like or want; it's not a major issue, or at least, it shouldn't be. If buyer didn't like it, just set it aside or throw it out. Don't make an issue out of it. I believe the seller had good intentions in including it, and to ruin perfect feedback over something like that is sad.
JMO Of course, you are entitled to yours.

Except that in this case the seller is proselytizing on buyer's dime.

Too many people get offended too easily - the neg wasn't justified. That said - buyers will have a hard time leaving feedback on any of the other sites because most sites don't have it. They won't be buying anywhere if leaving feedback is a deciding factor.

Honestly, if it's not related to your business - coupons, shwag, etc - leave it out.

Not really. One pamplet or insert isn't going to inflate shipping charges. When you get bills, you may get print ads with them from other companies. The company gets paid in those cases. What do you do if you don't want them? You throw them away, you don't penalize the company for sending them to you.
It's no different that a seller choosing to add a packing slip, thank you note, or what not. If they don't, you won't pay any less for shipping, and you don't pay anymore if they do. You don't neg a seller for not including a packing slip, or neg one if they do. Like Elsa sang, Let It Go.
Don't sweat the petty things.

Introducing religion or politics into a business transaction is probably going to offend some people.
That said, I believe Trinton pointed out that we can't tell whether a buyer has bought 4/400 items so the presumption of a % left could be entirely incorrect because there may have been alot of transactions about which she left no feedback.

I see NO mention of religion in the auction in question, nor in any of the others listed by the OP.
Therefore, I can not see any grounds for the buyer to leave a negative, and especially a non-related issue. If the negative had to due directly with auction content, delivery or not as described I can see her point. Other than that I find her feedback unacceptable!

You're right, there will always be some that would be offended. They are entitled to their opinion, but in the scheme of things, I don't think it is or should be a major issue. JMIO
Thank you for posting Trinton's comment. I remember the comment but not in enough detail to post it. He did say what you state.

The OP is not addressing the religious correctness of the feedback, but rather the frequency of the buyers use of negative feedback. I have to agree with the OP's point that many buyers give out a majority of negative feedbacks not always for the correct reasons, and some people just like being hurtful!!

You're right, he said he didn't agree with the feedback but did agree that they had the right to their opinion.
I agree that people can get over zealous with posting negative feedback. A little kindness and tolerance are good things.

I get packages from Amazon, Kohls, ect as well as samples of this and that all the time. In all the paperwork are panphlets for other products, other vendors ect... I don't have time to be offended - I recycle it.
I don't believe it is wise to include things like this nor religious pamphlets in any package - but is it really something to get all worked up about? I'm more concerned if the item I've bought arrives in a timely manner, if it's described correctly and all the pieces are there. Now if it was pornagraphy - I might have an issue.

I am not judging if the act of including non-related material in packing is right or wrong, but I do not feel this feedback relates directly to the item/auction.
It is your choice how you treat materials used in the packing process: I use plastic grocery bags, and most the receipts in them.
OP is not referring to the religious content of the feedback, but if you read what I stated earlier; he is addressing the frequency of this buy's use of negative feedback! Many buyers like to dispense poor feedback just because they can, and sellers are crippled to defend. Sad very sad
