Disclosing Items Come from a Smoking Environment

I was always curious - why does ebay not require this disclosure from it's sellers? There is quite a large group of people that can't stand items from smokers. Then there are also the damages dealt to various forms of merchandise from smoke that discolor or ruin collectibles.

While we're making a wish list, I would like eBay to require sellers to list the armpit measurement for clothing as a required field.

Re: Disclosing Items Come from a Smoking Environment

I don't think anyone is discounting the fact that some people are sensitive to smoke (and other things), but in all honesty, more of my buyers would be upset abt Febreeze than smoke.   I care very much about my buyers & I sell clothes, but I think I've been asked less than 10x in 27 years.  Most of us aquire items secondhand & have no idea their history.

I do understand what you're saying, but I get more questions abt what laundry detergent I use & if I use Febreeze, so logistically, it just wouldn't work.  There are so many things that bother some people.   I have to say that I understand OP's point though b/c I once was shopping at a 'estate sale store', IDK what you call them, less antiques, more MCM & more current.  Anyway, I bought a large statue.   I already owned 3 of these in different colors, so I know they don't smell.  It NEVER would have occurred to me that pottery/ceramic could smell of smoke, but sure enough, I got this 2 foot tall statue home & it positively REEKED of smoke.  I was stunned!  I get it with clothing & upholstery, but ceramic?  I never would have thought it was possible.  I washed that thing so many times & got it better, but never got it completely out 😐

A lot of sellers source through thrift stores and garage sales so what should they disclose? There is no possible way of knowing where these things have been!

A close friend of mine sources from thrifts and has a disclaimer to the effect of:

My items come from various sources and I cannot guarantee they originated from a smoke-free environment.

I've seen many sellers use a similar disclaimer.

Re: Disclosing Items Come from a Smoking Environment

I purchased vintage Tupperware here about 15 years ago that reeked so bad of cigarette smoke that I had to soak it in vinegar overnight.  That did the trick.

It didn't occur to me to complain or leave a neg.  I guess I felt like it goes with the territory of buying used stuff.

But if I had allergies, I would probably inquire before purchasing.
