I have been a seller for 20years, 100% approval. Shipped an item that came back to me because USPS label got ripped off somehow, leaving only the return address. ( I bought the label through ebay so the tracking info was automatically added) It got lost in the mail until it finally came back to me 3 weeks later. Buyer opened case. (He was such a **bleep** about it too) Ebay refunded money and kept seller fee and of course I also lost the postage. I appealed TWICE and they rejected me both times. Man, ebay makes millions and they can't give me $10 back? Shameful.

Well I would expect the buyer to open a case if he didnt receive the item, too bad you let Ebay step in, you probably got a defect, along with losing your fvf's.Why would you think Ebay was responsible for the torn off label? You can check your dashboard for the defect.

You should have refunded the buyer.
Tracking only matters if it shows delivered.

We used to source boxes from a place my wife worked.
Every so often she would call, received one of our shipments. LOL
Always found it funny, and strange.
Funny because a worn out half taped over old label was used instead of the new easily seen one.
Strange because, I would get the bill for it. Not whoever created that old label

Ebay would have given you back the fees if you refunded the buyer.
The buyer didn't get what they ordered, of course they are annoyed.
And seemed to not have refunded because eBay only takes the fees when they are forced to make the decision.
You really have nothing to appeal.

I think what is shameful is that you didn't take responsibility as a seller and refund your buyer. For someone who has sold here for two decades, there is no excuse for not knowing that was your responsibility.
If $10 makes or breaks you, I don't think reselling is what you need to be doing. Just my opinion.

You're disappointed because a shipping label you put on a package got damaged and didn't get delivered so the buyer got a refund?
If you had refunded the buyer, you would have got your fee's back.

I would be elated that enough of the label was there to get it back. The item sold for $52 you have it now listed for $75 so you will be getting your $10.

Somewhere in eBay, there are two eBay employees talking about the seller who had 20 good years of sales, and is complaining that eBay isn’t going to gift $10 to him for his issue.
this is 100% your issue. The label you put on wasn’t a fixed well. You’re lucky you got the item back. Surprising that you think that the buyer should’ve been out his money.

At least you got your package back. I once got back half a mangled label (no package) with some lengthy paperwork for description to fill out so maybe they could "find" it. That didn't happen. But luckily my customer understood and accepted a refund.
Stuff happens sometimes but that wasn't ebay's doing.

The only remedy for this is to change how you affix your labels going forward.

"Shipped an item that came back to me because USPS label got ripped off somehow"
@flamencofemme did you use scotch tape?

In my opinion, it wasn't the buyer who was a jerk.
Count your blessings that the buyer didn't leave appropriate feedback.

I once received a package where the supposedly self-adhesive label was barely hanging on by one corner. Problem appeared to be that the package had some sort of slightly greasy coating on the outside (I'm thinking it might have been for water resistance) and the peel-and-stick label wasn't adhering. I have no idea how the box manufacturer intended for anyone to be able to tape it and label it. I think the seller had just slapped on the label regardless and hoped for the best.

Mine was a nice and neat clean PFR bubble mailer with a book inside and an adhesive label. I have no idea what might have happened that they just found half a label on some ragged poly. I've tried to imagine the situation that happened in! Some kind of mechanical automation gone wild!
