I posted earlier about a buyer making a false claim on a 10k ring we sold them a few days ago. This same buyer has an open return request for a the item and we discover they have this item now for sale on Mercari using our photos from ebay. I stumbled upon it today. Same customer, has her name on the Mercari account same ring. This person has a total of 10 purchases on ebay and 3 sells on Mercari, a newbie infrequent buyer (scammer) and seller on both websites. The customer was reported to ebay for their false claim and we sent a screenshot of the item for sale on the message system here to the buyer. We also warned the buyer that they better send us back what we sent. Unbelievable what these scammers will do on here. We congratulated, LOL! THE BUYER FOR HER 300 PERCENT MARKUP ON THE ITEM. WE SOLD IT TO HER FOR LIKE 220.00. SHE HAS IT UP FOR SALE FOR 480.00 ON MERCARI. The item is fairly rare so IMPOSSIBLE for this to be another ring this person has to sell OTHER than what we sent them.

Interesting twist to this long story. Buyer just left positive feedback. Feedback says something like this. “I am sorry I was A DUMMY and went to a pawn shop and they gave me the wrong info about the ring. “ The seller shipped fast and gave me an excellent price on the ring”. Not at all certain where that is coming from but is certainly is a great save for her and her rep on here.

Boy that is interesting. I mean really interesting. It may be that they actually got a warning from Ebay, something we will never know for sure, but they just may have gotten one regarding of how they treated this transaction.
This is just a fantastic outcome on a very sketchy transaction. I am really happy for you.

You busted her and it scared her, perfect! Hopefully she'll abandon it as a money making tactic, it was stupid anyway.

Now let this be a lesson for all that when you do take some action, some very positive outcomes can sometimes happen. Thank you especially for your witty, also spot on and helpful posts on here. You are one of the ebay community special people. You know how to talk to someone with empathy and knowledge.

MOI??? Thank you what a sweet sentiment! But from what I can tell, this outcome was all you. Your original post detailed the steps you had already taken, steps that appear were just right, and the thread was just sharing an interesting case that was already nearly wrapped up, so thanks for doing that! Has the ring arrived back yet?

@vintagecraze50 wrote:Well we have an update. The buyer returned the ring but kept the original box with certificate of authenticity. Presumably so they can use that box and cert to scam someone else with something not what it is. Let me tell you guys we got through this because we did what we did by reporting them, calling them on their phony claim and hopefully this kind of buyer will not be visiting anybody else on here. Thanks for all the support and help. You all are terrific and what makes ebay great.
Would you consider messaging the buyer back about the missing items? I've done that before with buyers when their returned items are incomplete. Not all the time though.
One thought since I'm a dunce with jewelry, how do you know the ring you got back is the real thing and not a bait and switch knock off?

@vintagecraze50 wrote:I choose not to get into any other entanglements with this buyer. Full refund. I just put in the message in the return when you go to do the refund that buyer did not return box or original paperwork. I could do a call to the concierge and let them know just so they know they probably need to do something about this account.
Hm, that's your choice. Less than full refunds will not result in any other issues with the buyer as they would now have to deal with ebay about it and not you. That's UNLESS they open a new account and go all crazy on you.
At the very least, please report your buyer so maybe the buyer would be less likely to do this to anyone else in the future. You already know how it felt to be a victim of this, don't allow this buyer to do this to any of us in the seller community. Thanks.

Mmm. I'd still report them for their actions. If the buyer truly was a dummy and it's a one time thing, then they should be fine absorbing just one bad buyer report in ebay.

It’s the real thing could not duplicate something like this. Thanks for asking though and the report was already in for the buyer from the get go so ebay knows.

@vintagecraze50 wrote:Also no real loss to us with the box and the certificate. We are long term dealers in this merchandise and have plenty of surplus as far as manufacturer’s boxes and certificates. We can order them from the manufacturer if needed. We have an account with them.
Probably just as well you didn’t withhold anything, since depending on what you withhold might net you less after losing the final value fee refund.
Why would they lose the FVF refund?
If a seller uses the partial refund protection, they are not refunded any of the fvfs on the transaction.

My mistake, sorry. You are correct, on these types of partial refunds it does not appear you get FVFs back.

I have a question I hope you might be able to answer. I just checked my feedback on both of my accounts. The selling account and the buying account. When I go to view this buyers feedback on my seller account I get the same user ID as the original person purchasing, however, when I switch to my selling account I look at the feedback and this person has a totally different user ID next to that feedback. I am asking because if this is any indication that this person has done the ole start another account to scam somebody else I would like to know.
03-12-2024 05:47 AM
I MEANT when I switch from the selling to the BUYING account. Sorry, typed too fast. The ID’s are different for this person on the feedback when you view it from the selling account and the buying account.

Of course you cant stop the start another account thing on here. It’s the scammers life blood.LOL!!!
