Customer provided the wrong address and now wants a refund

I recently sold a item to a customer, i packed it and sent it out the same day 1st class royal mail

2 days later the buyer contacts me asking me to check the address, i showed him the address he provided when he ordered the item and he says its the wrong address... The item was "delivered" today and now he has put in a refund request

The reason - Damaged item
In his notes - Says item has been delivered but i have not received

Ive messaged him explaining again that its his responsibility to provide the correct address when he ordered and that 2 days after dispatch i could not do anything about it, he says its my fault and he wants a refund

On the refund page i dont see a option to reject the refund request?

Sorry this happened to you...people have no integrity anymore.   Unfortunately, you have no option but to "accept" this return (if you refuse to accept it...EBAY will give customer immediate refund (and allow them to keep the item).   And you will get a defect on your account for not following policy.

You don’t have to reject the return request. If the buyer did file a return request and not an “item not received” case, then the buyer filed the wrong thing.

If you offer returns and a buyer files a return request, the buyer is required to return that item after the return is accepted. The buyer already stated that they don’t have the item so there is nothing for them to return to you. The return will time out because the buyer will be unable to ship the item back to you and eBay will close the return in your favor once the time has elapsed.

So just make sure you accept the return. You also might want to talk to eBay and point out to them the buyer admits to not having the item so MAYBE they might be able to close out on the spot for you or something. As to whether the buyer will end up filing the INR afterwards, we can cross that path if it comes.

He filed a return for a damaged item? Accept the return and make him return it. He may find that difficult.

Unfortunately, the buyer will likely just send back a rock or something.

Before you do anything, you might want to report the buyer for a. misusing returns and b. not providing a valid address.

Then I'd call (or chat) with an ebay rep to see if they are willing to look at the messages where the buyer states he had the wrong address.

Just curious did the buyer say why he thinks this is your fault? I’ve had this happen many times and just for reference for other sellers here as well, here is the method of how I deal with it.

- I ask them to provide their current complete shipping address. I try to have them type it out to me first. This is because I’ve found a few times if you are first to type the address and ask them to verify it, it’s easy for someone who initially already gave the wrong address to overlook any omissions or typos and mistakenly just say “yes (that’s my address).”

- If they don’t provide their shipping address, I don’t proceed any further and tell them I file the INR, which I’ll win. I refuse to help buyers who are unwilling to cooperate and help themselves. If they provide it and it’s different from their initial address, I then tell them the address I sent it to and ask if that address is familiar to them at all. This will document that the buyer IS associated with that initial address and that I didn’t pull it out of thin air. This also usually lets the buyer see and realize that the mistake was their doing, not mine. But if they continue and say it’s my fault, I politely tell them there is no way I could have coincidently made up that initial address that happened to be familiar to them (like their old house). It had to have been provided to me somehow from their account.

- I then tell them to try and coordinate with that old address to retrieve the item. If they strongly believe it will return to me, then I tell them we will wait until it does and I’ll be glad to help then. If it does return, then it turns into a item re-ship with shipping charged again or partial refund issue. If buyer can’t retrieve item and it’s delivered it’s up to you how to handle it. Send a replacement at a reduced cost maybe. Obviously if they are still singing the tune that it is all my fault then the buyer is just being stubborn and I don’t budge on anything. Encourage them to file INR it and I’ll win and be protected from feedback.

I told my seller that my address was wrong and to ship at a later date. He agreed and STILL shipped it early.

Unfortunately, sellers only have Seller Protection when we ship to the address the buyer gave eBay.

And there is a common, long standing scam of crooks asking sellers to redirect purchases from the real buyer to their address.

So.

First it was your responsibility to confirm that the addresses* you give eBay are up to date.

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy...

In addition, the seller is not required either to refund your payment or to reship the item if it goes to the provided, but wrong, address.

The seller could have asked if you would prefer to cancel the transaction, which automatically refunds you and which saves them the hassle of returned merchandise.

But they are not required to do so.

*You can have more than one address on your account and you can add or remove addresses as needed. But the address for a given purchase is the only one the seller can ship to.
