ours that we sent out
what we got back
So I sold an item to a customer, and thankfully I sent him pictures of the product before it shipped out. He contacted me 2 days after receiving the item and said it was no good, and did I want him to ship it back.
I said yes, I would like the item back. It just so happens that I knew the owner of the vehicle that my part came off of and when I asked the previous owner of the vehicle if all the functions of the column switch worked properly, he said yes.
We only ended up with the vehicle because it had a bad engine, and we bought it from him to add to our salvage yard.
I thought the customer would use the ebay return route, but he didn't he just boxed it up and took it to the post office.
Upon opening the package, the first thing I noticed was how dirty the item was, we clean everything up as much as we can before we ship the item out. The second, and biggest thing is, as you will see, in one picture there is a yellow number written on it with a liquid ink pen. And the other picture, its not there.
Which leads me to believe, he sent us back his defunct switch, hoping I wouldn't notice.
What has peaked my curiosity is, out of all the ways customers can scam somebody on e bay, and get away with it virtually every time, he didn't open any kind of case, such as INAD where I would have been forced to pay return shipping if I wanted it back. He did nothing other than send me a message asking if I wanted it shipped back.
He sent me a message this afternoon saying he noticed that the item had been received and wanted to know when he would get his refund.
I haven't messaged him back about the discrepancy's between what we sent vs. what we got back. And calling e bay could get 5 different answers if I talked to 5 different people is what it seems like anymore.
What would be your advised next step?

Dear buyer,
It seems that we have received the wrong part back. As the attached photos will show - the one we received is missing our inventory number. As soon as that one is returned we will be happy to refund. Did you want us to send this one back to you?

That would be a good approach. I wanted to have the wording come off as it was an accident, and not make it sound accusatory, and that phrasing seems to me like that may be the way to go. Thanks!

Unfortunately eBay will likely side with the buyer and you will be out of the item and payment. Don't be surprised if the buyer complains to eBay and eBay refunds the buyer out of your funds. Happens all the time now.

It takes cojones to sell auto parts on Ebay where fraud is rife with buyers returning their defective parts with a false return. But you seem to be having the volume to handle the occasional fraud. Hopefully it doesn't get out of hand.

He might then open a Dispute, and you should be prepared to lose it.
But he might not, especially if he has any sort of bad track record with eBay.
I notice you did not say who paid for the return of the part?
I gather he sent it back on his own dime?
To me that indicates he wants to stay off eBay's radar.
The earlier suggested response Message is perfect. Polite professional and specific.

Dear customer ,
I Am puzzled as to Why you would send me Your dirty, old, defective part ?
I Am not a Recycling center .
Shall I call eBay to see if they can assist in this matter ?
Kind regards,

ROTFL.
That is the last thing I would suggest to your buyer.
If he takes you up on it he wins automatically 🙂

He didn't use Ebay for the return shipment, which I thought was odd. If he opens a dispute, I will just refund it. I'm hoping if I call him out on this, I won't hear from him again.

I've definitely had my share of issues for sure. Volume wise I would say we do okay. I'm just glad it was an $85 dollar switch, and not a $2000 engine.

Yes, I've had it happen before. Just never had a situation where they paid to ship the part back, and I have photo's to prove its not what I sent out. Thats why I thought it would be best to bring it to a group of experienced sellers who had perhaps dealt with this before.
I know as soon as I send him both photo's he almost certainly will go to ebay and open a case, if he does I will just refund it.
As somebody mentioned in one of the answers to this question. he may have opted to send it back on his own dime because he doesn't want to be on or maybe already is, on e bay's radar.

don't forget to add them tp your blocked bidder list

Good luck getting to talk to anyone at EBAY.. and then to get them to UNDERSTAND the issue.. and THEN to have to authority and responsibility to do anything..
YOU ARE SCREWED.. don't let it get your blood pressure up.. remember the days ebay was fair..
Advertise it on Ebay.. when you get a inquiry end the sale and hope the potential buyer has the smarts to look for the item on craigslist or offerup or FB marketplace...
I started on Ebay i '97... and can still remember

He can go to the source of his funds and file there for a refund. He has proof he returned something to you. eBay isn't very helpful with credit card disputes.
