What does this mean.
Quote: "Contact Form is not allowed as a variation specific"
I have a single listing selling five different types of switch, which I have been selling for two years. The contact form gives five options, each with a different price.
I changed the stock-numbers of each switch (new stock arrived), and it came up with this message, and will not allow me to update the stock-numbers.
Any ideas?

I wish I could help you,I have never done a variation listing before. I am not familiar with a contact form,it sounds like where someone trys to ask you something.
my best advice is to make a new listing or use the trick sell one like this and try to copy your listing. From what you have described it sounds like you want to update stock numbers but cant override the old ones.
I am sure somone who is more familiar will be along but people have tried the sell one like this when they could not get things to go the way they wanted in an older listing

Sorry I can't solve your technical difficulties.
Here is a discussion with many sellers getting more sales with separate listings.
Separate listings vs. variations listing.

I don't have an answer for you, but we are very fortunate to have @shipscript write a tutorial for all of us to use when working with variation style listings.
You can find the tutorial here. I hope it will answer your question:

@roel-2121 - You're in the UK so you may want to post on community.ebay.co.uk in case things are different there.
Here on the .com site I can answer the question. eBay has been messing around with item specifics a lot and it affects variation listings. For example-
I had a listing with Pattern as a variation attribute. eBay changed it so that Pattern was a forced selection from a drop-down and was no longer eligible as a variation attribute with custom values. In order to edit the listing I had to remove the Pattern attribute (and all my variations) and pick a different attribute that was allowed in the category- essentially rebuilding all the internals of the listing.
That's what you're running into. In order to edit the listing you have to delete all your variations and choose a new applicable attribute then re-create the variations, upload photos, quantity, price, etc.

make one listing for each switch and dump the 5-in-1...

When eBay defines a required attribute for the master record, that attribute might not be allowed in the variations. That appears to be the case with "Contact Form". In order to use that as a variation label, you will need to modify the label to something else in the variation, like "Contact-Form" or "Contact Action", which will require a full overhaul.
Alternatively, take the suggestion and to list your five types of toggle switches in five different listings.
