Commission

Hi there does anyone also feel that it is a little unfair of eBay to add the postage cost on to the sale item amount, then charge the seller commission on the total amount? It is not as if we are making money from the postage charge, it is solely to cover postage of the item.

Judging by the hundreds of millions of threads already posted in the Community regarding this exact topic, I'd say plenty of people feel exactly the way you do.

Re: Commission

ALL payment processors charge fees on the TOTAL amount of the sale, including any tax and shipping. It's been that way since payment processing began.

Re: Commission

Many people feel it is unfair.  And like you, not only did they agree to the terms of service here, they apparently haven't thought through the numerous reasons why eBay includes the shipping cost in calculating the FVF.

Re: Commission

Unfair to whom?

eBay makes money off of such: but hey if they stopped it I could list an item with a price of $1.00: and charge $1000.00 for shipping and have very small fees for a $1001.00 sale... ehh.

Use to go on (fee avoidance): and fixed by charging such on shipping stopped it> as well as made eBay more money of course.....

Have you noticed the also charge you on the tax as well???

Re: Commission

Years ago, eBay was outraged when SOME SELLERS abused the system by lowering item price and increasing postage cost to avoid fees. Now that eBay overcharges (commission charge above processing fee) ALL SELLERS, eBay is no longer outraged.

eBay could easily adjust fees to be fair. As I always use eBay shipping, eBay could easily just credit me the amount I actually pay for shipping (but still charge a transaction fee - just not commission). Pirate bay and other shipping services already communicate with eBay to prefill tracking number and could easily tell eBay the actual postage amount paid. eBay recently decided to add Shipping and State Tax when calculating your Sponsored Ad Fees.

The eBay ONEFEE that adds Commission Fee + Transacion Fee instead of doing correct calculations for each has opened Pandoras box for eBay Fees with no going back to not overcharging a Commission fee on Shipping and State Tax.

Laws require business owners and the company to be truthful, not fair.

Yes, lots of people do.

Re: Commission

I'm thankful for the opportunity eBay gives me to sell.  I consider them a silent partner.  They earn every penny in the deal.  I remember back when there was no internet and to sell anything you had to do a 50/50 split on consignment or worse run a bricks and mortar store with thousands of dollars a month in overhead.

Re: Commission

So I guess you were not around when eBay charged the FVF on the price of the item only.

Them was the good ole days -- sellers listing and selling their thousand dollar diamond rings and 2K ear buds for about 25 bucks apiece and paying just $2.50 for final value fees.

short answer: NO

long answer: NO, not at all

and it is not a commission...it is a "fee"

(....a fully deductible cost of doing business)

That's not true. My brother thinks the FVF on the shipping cost is unfair. So your answer is wrong.

Re: Commission

As others mentioned there are thousands of postings on this forum about the same topic. You can search from those and you will find the same answers to all of them. Bottom line it doesn't really matter what I think it's eBay's site, their rules and what I knew when I started selling. You either accept it and sell here or you don't and you go somewhere else but eBay is HIGHLY unlikely to change this policy.

@pattistreasures2012

Not 'solely to cover'... I make a little money on my shipping even after materials, labor costs, FVFs and actual postage.
