a BUYER should NOT be able to open a RETURN request PERIOD., if an item is listed as "FOR PARTS NOT WORKING" "NO RETURNS" 


if you're buying an item as "FOR PARTS NOT WORKING" you're taking a risk that yeah these items might /probably do have some sort of issue ... 


there is nothing else i could have done to make this situation any better... 

i ended up contacting ebay and got them involved and they were going to FORCE me to return their money even though it was as accurate as i possibly could make it...  

eventually the ebay employee ended up "EXTENDING A ONE TIME COURTESY" to me and made it sound like she was doing me a favor...  ofc i played along with what they said as it was being turned in my favor however this shouldn't be considered a COURTESY this should be just the right thing to do in a situation where oh NOOO... IM GONNA SAY  EBAY BAD WORDS.....
THE BUYER IS WRONG!



honestly calling it a ONE TIME COURTESY in this situation just kind of ticked me off as again there was nothing i could possibly have done to change the outcome every thing was listed as accurately as possible!

Buyers have way to much power...

Why should the buyer not be able to open a request?  What if you sent them something completely different than the listing showed?  Are they supposed to just be out of luck, too bad?  No one would shop on eBay if that were the case.

 

In fact, what reason did your buyer select when they opened a return request?

The day eBay stops allowing returns for parts not working items is the day that we will have a flood of Rolex watches listed with that condition.  Scammers would clean up.

As a computer shop owner and seller of PC parts myself, I have a procedure for these occasional transactions.

 

Any item I list  with AS-IS and PARTS ONLY, I use the tag of NO RETURNS ARE OFFERED.   Because I know going in that any buyer can return anything if they choose to.


However.


In the case of items like these, I make sure the item is returned, regardless of its purchase price. I force the item to be returned at the buyer expense prior to refunding. This discourages some scam attempts, and lowers the amount of buyers that may risk processing a return.

 

If they do return it, I examine the item and provide a refund as needed.  But its been the best way to handle these in my experience.

 

Buyers unfortunately quite often do NOT read the description.  You are lucky if they look at more than the first photo and the price tag.

 

And when they buy from a phone its even worse, as the description has to be CLICKED/TAPPED to even read it.

 

So while you might have it listed with every disclaimer, that just doesn't mean anything.  Here is an excerpt from one of my recent AS-IS listings:

 

This listing is AS-IS and NO RETURNS ARE OFFERED. 

 

Please review the photos included for condition and details of the item!

Return Policy:

Unless otherwise stated in the main description above, item(s) will have a 30 day return period. For any item being sold AS-IS and no returns offered, there is a return option for the item if the item is not as described in the above listing. These return options will require the return of the item.  In most cases, a return label can be requested or may be provided.

Please note that all serial numbers or identifiers on an item are recorded and sent through the eBay messaging system. All purchases are photographed during packaging and a copy is sent to the buyer directly through the eBay messaging system prior to the package being handed to a shipping carrier.

 

Granted, this is in the description where most buyers probably won't read.   I have taken to including a note with the main points of the item listed in the photo of the item, so if they don't read any other notes, they will see the critical points regarding the item:

Anyway.  Not much else can be done.  You are at the mercy of the buyer.  You can do your best to lessen the chance of returns, but ultimately you cannot prevent them from happening.

 

I had one last night myself, for something trivial.  But it was again due to a confusion about what they were buying, based on a photo that gave the wrong impression.  Despite everything else being clear, or so I thought.   But it was a less than 10 dollar purchase, not over a 100 like your case.  So I get why it stings when this happens.

OK, let's say you purchased a diamond tennis bracelet  ($450) from me on eBay.

I shipped you a box of trash instead.

But you cannot open an item not as described case.

That seem reasonable/fair to you?

I quit selling junk that does not work properly when eBay implemented Service Metrics.

 

Selling any type of junk that does not function as it should has always been risky business. Does not matter how well a seller describes the item. 

 

Selling junk or items that are not tested is just begging for a return. 

 

I just give it away to a gal that sells at a flea market.

Even if you were to convince eBay to make certain specific returns impossible, that would not protect sellers from a credit card chargeback.

 

Ultimately, eBay cannot have an effective return policy that is any more restrictive than the payment method's return policy, as the payment method's policy is always a last resort for any buyer.

That used to be true on .uk but then distance selling regulations changed and ebay had to follow suit and comply. I assume similar things happened on .com

that some of the memory did not work (hence why i listed it the way i did because it's "UNTESTED" )

 

before you come at me with the WELL IF YOU KNEW THERE WERE DEFECTIVE STICKS WHY WOULD YOU LIST IT 
we don't have the time nor the ability to test every stick of memory properly (it takes quite a while per stick to test in properly) before we sell it so instead we just sell them as untested 

UNTESTED FOR PARTS NOT WORKING IN OTHER WORDS THERE MAY BE DEFECTIVE UNITS IN THIS LISTING YOU"RE TAKING A RISK

@eburtonlab Actually there is a category that no returns are allowed (some type of 'service' or ??) and bad guys list things in that category to sell $700 cameras and ship a $10 one etc. I do agree, does not stop a CC CB.

ok a lot of you brought up  scammers let me say it this way an item should not be able to be returned as "item not working" if it's listed AS PARTS NOT WORKING ....  an item sent that's completely different than the item in the listing is not the same thing we're talking about here... yes the buyers should be able to be protected from scammers... 

we're talking about people returning items as "NOT WORKING  in a PARTS NOT WORKING listing..  item not as described is completely different than what this post is referring to

@gator08041971 (you may have stated this, your post was a bit long for me to read it all)

 

Unless buyer opens a 'not as described' which then You, the Seller must either 'pay for the return shipping label' or 'just refund in full' and the buyer does NOT have to pay return shipping.

Is there a "parts not working" category in Computer stuff?.........I know there is in other categories.  Some time ago, an Ebay blue confirmed if items were listed in that category and had a no return policy, ebay would not force a return or refund.........but had to be in that "not working" CATEGORY.  This was more than several years ago.......so may no longer apply.....

You are violating the letter or spirit of the Chance Listings Policy.

You have an unrealistic expectation that if the memory sticks don't work, the buyer should take a $250 to $300 loss and not dispute it.


The eBay Return Policies reflect the reality of the financial institution policies.
1) The buyer files a dispute
2) The financial institution debits eBay
3) The seller refunds or else eBay refunds from the seller's funds


The outcome will be "3)" whether the buyer files the initial dispute on eBay or their financial institution.


eBay is not running a Court TV show, deliberating evidence and rendering judgements. The debit or threat of the debit drives the whole process in the buyer's favor.


Your refusal to test the merchandise will lead to a decay in Seller Metrics to Below Standard and a penalty percentage added to your Final Value Fees.
