Buyer who does not pay has to be reported to ebay

My buyer restrictions block buyers with 2 or more unpaid items in the last year. I have had buyers with feedback for several unpaid items. I thought they should have been blocked. I contacted ebay and got the answer to my question. When a buyer does not pay the order is automatically cancelled by ebay after the waiting period. Ebay does NOT track these cancellations automatically. When your buyer does not pay you have to report the buyer to ebay to get the unpaid item put against his account. They only track reported buyers. In summary, don't just leave feedback, also REPORT THE  BUYER TO EBAY  so they can add the report to the buyers account.

Good so far... 😊

If you mean buyers with feedback comments from sellers stating that they never paid, that's a policy violation on the part of those sellers, who could get dinged for it if the buyer chose to complain. Moreover, those feedback comments from the other sellers achieve nothing toward getting that deadbeat blocked by awarding Unpaid strikes, as the seller needs to cancel after four days and select the cancellation reason of "Buyer did not pay." That will award an Unpaid strike on their account. (There is nothing further that the seller needs to do; the Unpaid cancellation is what puts the strike on the buyer's account.)

When a buyer does not pay (after four days), the order can be automatically cancelled if desired; that is the seller's option. You set your preference for that (as well as how long you want eBay to wait before cancelling) on your Preference page here: https://www.ebay.com/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase

Actually yes, they do. If you cancel a sale with the reason of "Buyer did not pay," eBay will automatically record that. There is nothing further you need to do.

No, whoever told you that is simply wrong. (That is not unusual for the first-tier telephone Customer Support.) Per eBay:

"When a seller cancels an order because the buyer hasn't paid, the unpaid cancellation is recorded on the buyer's account."

You do not have to report the buyer as a separate step. Just cancel the order and select "Buyer has not paid" and it gives them an Unpaid Item strike.  Those people who left feedback instead did not give them a strike because they would have been unable to leave feedback if they did that cancellation process correctly.  You got the wrong answer from eBay.

No, you the seller have to do that.  And you apparently know that, so assume you left off the "not" between "is" and "automatically".

The rest of your information is spot on.

@brightlightbookseller  Long ago, eBay used to block feedback from both parties when a buyer got an unpaid item strike.  But now, sellers can still leave feedback after they go through the process of canceling due to "Buyer hasn't paid."

Since a seller can only leave Positive, why would a seller leave feedback for a buyer who didn't pay?

Many leave negative comments under a positive feedback, which can get them in trouble but they either don't know or don't care.

Ebay gave me bad info... The buyer did not pay. I have the automatic cancellation setting after 4 days. I tried to follow their advice and file a report. The system will not alllow me to file a report after the order has been cancelled. So much for customer service.....

I found that out today. The buyer did not pay. The order went to the automatic cancellation after 4 days. I tried to file the report. The system does not allow that.  Bad advice from customer service which I spread to others.

Correct. But as @a_c_green explains, it's done automatically. You aren't filing a report, but eBay is aware of the UI Strike. 🙌

Ignore what I wrote. Ebay gave me bad info and I relayed it thinking it would be helpful. Once you have done the cancellation for nonpayment you don't even have the option to do a separate report on the buyer for nonpayment.

You also don't need to do one.  The Cancellation for non payment is tracked by Ebay, that is how the Buyer Requirement you have set for blocking buyer with 2 non payments in the past 12 months works, because Ebay tracks the non payment strikes.

You did get some incorrect advice originally from Ebay.  You have gotten some great advice on this thread, I sure hope it helped you and that you better understand the process now.  If you still are unsure of anything, please ask.

Buyer who does not pay has to be reported to ebay

@carne.kay

Hopefully you have read the replies from those who have posted here for you.  Despite what the CS rep advised here is how the Unpaid item cancellation process works.

-First, Sellers have the choice to handle unpaid items manually or let eBay do it automatically after 4 days.  That setting is turned ON or OFF in your account settings here: Preferences for items awaiting payment (ebay.com)

Screenshot (662).png

-If it is turned on for Automatic cancellation then yes, eBay cancels after 4 days for you

-If it is turned off then you have to cancel manually via the drop down menu on the item in your Awaiting payment file.  The normal Cancellation flow has 3 reasons for you to choose from but with the Unpaid item flow (and proper wait time of 4 days) a 4th reason will be there, "Buyer hasn't paid".  Selecting THAT reason gives the Buyer the Unpaid item strike.  Feedback is then blocked once the cancellation has been completed.

-eBay DOES keep track of Unpaid items on Buying accounts.

-Sellers can change the lowest default Unpaid item strike block of 2 to a higher value AND can change the time period from 12 months to 6 or 1.  Those settings can be found on this page: Buyer Management | eBay

-To my knowledge Reporting the Buyer is beneficial to alert eBay of an issue but has nothing to do with giving a Buyer an Unpaid item strike.

-I use the manual setting because I work with my customers if they need or want more time to pay.
