I'm a new seller and could use some advice. I have a no return policy. Buyer reached out to me via a message stating his daughter ordered the item, not him, and he wants to return it when he receives it. Should I pay for the return shipping or the buyer?

The buyer needs to pay the return shipping, it is up to him to keep his account safe so his children (anyone) can not access it.

You should NOT only 'pay for any shipping'- you should also NOT take the return and tell the buyer "sorry, I do not accept returns or refund purchases' and then...
let them open a 'return' and if and only if they open as a 'not as described' will you be 'forced' to accept the return (more than likely they will use 'bought by mistake' and then you will have the ability to 'deny' the return.
Must be the Ken Doll if a 'kid' did it, but here's the thing..
NOBODY can actually 'accidently' buy something- it takes 3 different 'clicks' to accomplish it and I doubt their 'kid' knows how..but either way, my advice is at the top.

Reads like a remorse return. They pay. Make sure you accept it. Tell them to open return claim & see if they even send it back to you. A lot of times they don't, just to see what they can get away with. Sorry for your situation. Hang in there.

Item is in the mail. At this point do not do anything. Don't even email the buyer.
It' in the buyer's 'ballpark' now. If buyer wants to return it buyer needs to open a claim.
No returns does not mean no returns on eBay.
Buyer should pay for return...but you have to wait for buyer to open claim...and which claim buyer opens it under.

@ckimodog why would you Accept it when you don't take returns?

But what if they open INAD, you think ebay would back the seller even with the email saying it was a mistake. I'd tell them to ship it back on their dime, then refund them minus original shipping.

@tsme35 I already addressed that in my initial response but that is NOT the situation as of yet not to mention that makes this buyer a thieving liar since buyer already said 'it was a mistake' and therefore Not NAD
(but to repeat and elaborate):
If buyer opens a NAD then seller has NO choice but to accept and either pay for return label or refund without return (seller choice).

Buyer could do a charge back and be out the item and money.

For years I had a "no returns" policy, but for a remorse return I would sometimes make exceptions.
