I don't accept casual returns, so buyer is claiming that the item is defective. However, it's clear from our messages back and forth that they didn't install it properly.
Can I dispute this return as buyer's remorse?

What a world, man. I don't know what to expect now. I'm now so wrapped up in the excitement of discovering how in the hell this will all conclude that I've lost all interest in the buyer's shenanigans.
Either way I'm going to keep this Representatives chat on file in case I need to play their words against them.
Good luck wasting more time chatting this out with eBay.

If it makes you feel any better, when a buyer does a INAD return, ebay does ask for at least one picture.
You won't like hearing this though...
I've heard from many sellers that that picture is just a formality.
You could upload a picture of a banana or a old pair of shoes and it wont matter.
I've even heard that buyers have uploaded the very same picture in the listing as the return picture.
So it seems like the picture is just a formality and does not even come in to play.
The return and refund will be granted.

And apologies for sounding so cynical. Its just that your story is a very familiar one after years and years of being on this board. And the outcome is always the same...seller loses...always.

Yes, me too. And on the buyers board, buyers have been advised many times to do just that, because Ebay doesnt look at the pictures anyway.

I saw it's original implementation as just a hoop for the buyer to jump thru, thus keeping an honest buyer honest. Makes them think twice about doing a questionable return sequence.
Fewer returns means more money for eBay.

Yes, questionable on how many scammers that has stopped tho.

Again, no one who's responded here is saying we think this is a great policy. Our message in general is that eBay has requirements and rules and that we all have to follow them whether or not we agree with them. It would be swell for a seller if there was a requirement that a buyer submit pictures to support a claim. But there isn't.
Generally speaking, no one who replies here is an eBay employee. If/when an eBay employee does respond, that employee is identified as such.

Inexperienced sellers tend to have grandeur visions of eBay going over the all details they have presented and siding with them in a dispute over an INAD.
Some even get the item back from the buyer and then expect eBay to deny the refund.
The system is automated.......

Consider this a landmark case!

Glad that I took no one's advice and pursued my issue with eBay, because the case closed in my favor.

Congrats on the win. We do see this occasionally as a basic one time courtesy to the seller. If you happen to run into this type of situation again, let us how you handle it and the outcome.

I for one will no longer sell anything that requires an electrical installation
