Did you mean:

Buyer returned a different Item than I sent.

Buyer did not return the same item I sent.  Ebay Customer Service was not helpful.  Ebay refunded without my knowledge.  I lost over $200.00.

You are an experienced seller, and a TRS.  I'm surprised that you haven't encountered abusive buyers in the past, and thus don't realize how the eBay Money Back Guarantee system works or how seller's can protect themselves.

Perhaps this your first rodeo with an abusive buyer ... it happens to all of us eventually.  You will get nowhere, I think, with the off-shore, untrained customer service reps you find through the eBay site.  But, if you appeal with US-based customer service (more likely to find these on social media), then there is a chance that they will return your money ... like a one-time courtesy.

Fingers  crossed.  😊

In the future, consider listing your more expensive items with a 30-day buyer paid return, which will activate a couple of Seller Protections described on this policy page:  eBay Seller Protection Policies.

Re: Buyer returned a different Item than I sent.

You do have the opportunity to "prove" it was a different item with photos. You should not expect CS to "take your word for it".

I might add, when doing so, being professional and calm will almost always get you further with CS.

Hope this helps. 🙂

On any returns, tell buyers AHEAD of time that you will be opening the item returned in front of a US postal inspector and as long as it is the same item sent or not damaged they will get a refund, if not, a postal investigation will be filed and or proof sent to ebay for you.  Anyone who is legit has no fear, the scammers disappear.  Put it in the messages direct to them.

Re: Buyer returned a different Item than I sent.

The hard truth is ANY buyer can steal ANY item ANY time on ebay with this and other methods

Although highly unlikely a courtesy refund by ebay is the closest possibility, as for the answers given

#1 photos are a waste of time, ebay will not consider them as they prove nothing

#2 opening your return in front of postmaster is a waste of time, how are you going to prove what you sent, photos? refer to #1

Re: Buyer returned a different Item than I sent.

Postmaster will document what is inside of package on US postal official postal fraud papers, and it WILL be investigated unlike ebay.

Been there, done that and won.

But like I stated, just telling the scammer your going to do this usually chases them off. They disapear.

Don't be so negative just because you didn't know it could be done.

The only advice I'd offer is to revisit your Returns policy. Being a TRS, you have the ability to reduce the amount of the (impending) full refund by as much as 50% when a different/de-valued/destroyed item is returned to you... if you only offered (as little as) 30-Day (Buyer pays) Returns.

It's one of the last seller protections left... I'd use it. Good luck to you.

Re: Buyer returned a different Item than I sent.

Yup - you are spot on. The very idea of asking anyone in my local post office to do anything more than the bare minimum mandated is absolutely hilarious. They will not even scan a package for me - it's " use the kiosk" .... next in line......I have a story about a carrier who refused to pick up scheduled packages - even with notes to remind him - took a year to resolve - he finally disappeared, and all went back to normal after a year of visiting the office to report the problem, letters & phone calls. Maybe he was promoted LOL.

When I asked my local post office officials about opening a package in front of them for filming to prove receipt of correct items - the result.... blank stare and then "no" we don't do that we don't have time.... next in line please. Dismissive is the politest way to describe the response.

The unfortunate bottom line is for all online platforms - don't sell what you can't afford to lose. Pad your profit to absorb losses. Know that most transactions go well but know that some will go wrong and just know that in most cases the seller will take the loss. Factor in your time and emotional health - it is probably not worth it to stress over this since the odds are stacked against sellers. Calculate your time, heath, cost of goods, shipping and potential return costs and if a loss or return will cause stress - sell it on a local pickup platform.

Knowing that as a seller you can do everything "right  100% by the book and still get worked over by a buyer leaving you as the seller holding the bag is just a reality. There is little if no protection. Trying to get to an experienced eBay customer service representative to assist with an issue is really difficult.

The minimum eBay should consider doing is allowing sellers and buyers access to real live people with eBay experience to deal with problems and concerns. But.... in my view we are in cost cutting bot land and that will never happen.

Yes, if you feel the person is scamming, tell them to return it, then give the PO statement.  They disappear.  They do not want to deal with postal fraud.  Then you have no issue.  But you have to do it before, or even if they just filed a case.  I used to work in transportation.  For 20 years.  I know all the ins and outs.
