I have a seller requesting me to write on an item before sending it which would really decrease the value should it be returned. As long as eBay can review the messages there is no risk on my part right? I'm just nervous about them claiming the item was damaged and wanting a refund.

Do you mean a buyer is asking?
I would not do it.Messages may not protect you
This is a user to user board not eBay employees.

No, most Not As Described cases appear to be handled by a bot, and even if you call customer service, they often can't / won't close the case in your favor, either. In addition, if the item has a 30 day return policy, buyer can return it under that.
Is the item such that a grease pencil or similar marker could be used and later removed?
Is this an international shipment where the buyer wants you to write a code on it so a shipment center can sort it?

They didn't give a specific reason but I'm guessing it's to do with a particular fetish. The item in question and what they want written seems to cater to that. I just want to be protected. It is a high priced item.

Has this guy actually bought the item yet, or is he still just a prospective sale? If the latter (which I hope it is), I would just block him right away. You don't need that weirdness as part of the transaction.
EDIT: By "weirdness," I don't mean fetish issues (hey, whatever floats your boat), but the fact that he wants you to alter the item post-sale, beyond how it was shown in the listing.

This has got to be one of the strangest posts I've ever seen. lol
That said do not do it.
Besides, if it has to do with a fetish your doing it may actually increase the value to the buyer. But as you haven't been paid for your item just block and move on.
This actually sounds more creepy than scammy.

I just want to be protected.
There is no protection from Not As Desbribed claims. Sometimes a seller can win by calling ebay, but I'm not seeing "I gave in to buyer's fetish" as being a winning argument.
And again, if they are returned under your 30 day return policy in the same condition buyer received them, you are required to refund.

Har! Yes, I wasn't worried about PC; just wanted to be a little more clear about which weirdness I was referring to in my first paragraph.
(I had no idea how valuable those things are, nor that any would have been put away in storage since the early 1990s, in the case of the OP's listings.)

This has red flags written all over it! DON'T DO IT!! Tell him your required to ship the item in the same condition listed, if he'd like to cancel based on this you'd be happy to oblige.
