Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

Seasons greetings to all - I'll try to make this short, simple and remember that paragraphs are my friend:

1) I had a item listed for $149.95 with best offer. A buyer offered $125 and I accepted. Buyer paid, but then sent me a message asking to send to a different address in the same city. I replied that I would be happy to ship to the new address AFTER they changed/updated it on both PayPal and eBay. I also told them to message me back when done and I would relist the item.

2) I then (via eBay) cancelled the sale stating "problem with buyer's address" and the buyer was then refunded via PayPal. All good so far.

3) Then, just now, I received a new message from the buyer: "The address is already listed as an address on file so I will just re-buy, thanks." So it sounds like the buyer changed their address and is wanting me to relist. Okie-dokie.

4) Here's where it gets strange: I log into PayPal and see that they have they already paid again, and the new address is also there. So good to go? I then check my eBay All Selling page and the item is still in the "Sold" column but it is marked as "cancelled" and there is no "Print label option." So how did they pay for it when I never relisted it? It shows paid in PayPal but not on eBay.

5) To be clear there are three transactions on PayPal: 1) The orignial purchase for $125 with the incorrect address. 2) The payment of $125 refunded to the buyer. 3) Another purchase for $125 with the new address.

6) So now I'm confused. How were they able to buy it when I hadn't yet relisted it? So I thought about relisting it, thinking that once I do, the system will put two and two together and update my eBay page. Yes or no? And relist it at what price? $125 or the original amount?

7) So I called customer service and explained it just like I have here. Twice. And they still didn't understand. And even after them taking 5 minutes to review the situation, I got the feeling they still didn't understand, as what they then suggested didn't make sense. They said to print the label thru PayPal and send the item. (I told them I didn't feel comfortable doing that, as the sale doesn't show on eBay). They also don't know how the buyer was able to purchase an unlisted item...no explanation there. The other option was something about cancelling the new sale on eBay....BUT, there's no new sale to cancel.

So I thanked them for their time and RAN over here, as that's when I relized I wasn't going to find any solution via CS (bless their hearts for trying) and that I should have followed my first instinct, which was to elicit help from all you seasoned sellers here, as I usually lurk for answers to issues and see lots of great advice. (In fact, the above steps 1 and 2 was advice I gleaned from here, so thanks.)

So if anyone here can help me figure this new debacle, I'd really appreciated it!

There's a mistake in what you did.   Buyer can buy and pay with the correct address.  If they paid using the wrong address all you had to do is refund the payment and have them pay again with the correct shipping address.

Strange!

Thanks for sharing. I can only compliment you for being very methodical. You're lucky that time is on your side because today is Saturday. I wish somebody can help.

Re: Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

I think you've hit the very rare "I need to uncancel a sale I cancelled"!

I recall this happening once before (that was posted here).

I think the answer is:

If the 2nd payment is there and marked OK to Ship then you should ship.

It's possible eBay are burned for their fees (unintentionally of course).....they will survive I'm sure. I don't think there is a process in place to give them the $15, if you feel really guilty you could call and ask.

Re: Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

I guess the buyer just sent the new payment to your account, person to person, so it isn't attached to the ebay listing. That's why ebay isn't showing anything or printing labels.

I don't know that you would be covered by ebay's MBG and paypal too, if you sent the item without them buying it from the listing? The way the buyer paid is sort of like doing a off site sale, in effect.

It's redundant, but maybe you should start over with your original plan of resisting so the buyer is wired to the ebay sale.

Maybe someone else sees this clearer and can offer better advice...

That's an interesting theory. I bolded part of your comment because I originally forgot to say that there ARE two indications on eBay that DO suggest a second sale was made: The first was a pop-up window saying that a sale was made and that I was paid (which is why I logged into PayPal after reading the buyer's second message). The other is that the left sidebar total for sales DOES reflect the $125 amount paid. But under the "solds" the item still shows cancelled. Confusing. I'll update my original post with this new info.

Re: Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me albeit a slightly differnt back story. I Still dont know how it could happen and the buyer didnt want to finalize the sale after the second payment was canceled as he was saying the payment wasnt showing as being credited back to his account after a couple hours - I followed up with him and he said it took 2 days to credit. Just another breakdown on the ebay/PayPal Train...

Interesting. Do you have any more details? Why did you cancel the 2nd payment?

Maybe they just sent you money directly, since they already had your PayPal address?

Re: Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

I don't think it is some weird conspiracy here, the buyer might have paid through the original purchase when they made the purchase, and then made the repayment through the email sold notification, which isn't really attached to the transaction, it's just a notice with a link that says pay now.

Since your buyer is not against doing something a little inconvenient to get the item, how about you let the buyer know that you are sorry for the little extra because you canceled too fast, but for some basic ebay paperwork, you need them to just 'buy' the listing you are making for them.  Then you will mark it paid and ship to them.

This is a good possibility, thank you. But I don't totally understand exactly what you are saying in the second paragraph...could you explain like I'm five?

Ok, you make the new listing for them,  Then tell them that you need for them to buy it again, but not pay for it since they already repaid- so you can mark it paid and get it shipped ot to them.

If you want to go into detail, blame it all on ebay so their records are even and ebay gets their fees.

Re: Buyer requested different shipping address -- Need help completing the sale

If the ZIP code is the same, I would print out the label with the address shown on the payment, and then print out and tape over the address with the one the buyer wants it sent to.  That way tracking will show properly show delivered.

If it is a different ZIP code, then whether or not I agreed to the request would depend on if it is a high scam item and how the buyer's feedback left for others came across.

If it works, sell it. If it works well, sell it for more. If it doesn't work, quadruple the price and sell it as an antique.

Not anymore.  If you change the address on the package - it will not get delivered and come back to you as undeliverable.  Might work for a missing apartment, but another address with the same zip will not get delivered.

I know, I just went through this with a package that was bounced around for over a month.    I shipped and for some reason the post office couldn't deliver it to the address on the payment and kept sending it a few miles away.  When the buyer asked where it was, I check and was shocked that it had over 15 entries.  By the time it was over - my postmaster had directly gotten into the system and changed the barcode to my address and it came back to me.  The internal system showed over 50 scans before it finally came back to me.  The buyer never said anything, so whatever the problem was, I suspect they knew what it was and it was ok with them.  But now their postmaster knows there is a problem with it.

The upgraded postaal system in place now has the ship to address in the barcode and the barcode controls the entire sorting/delivery process except the last - where the delivery person makes the last scan at the mailbox.  And the barcode will reject the scan if it is in the wrong area.

So changing the address is not possible anymore, it will only cause delays and INR cases.
