Buyer is questionable, high value, have not shipped yet, is there a way for me to cancel an order?

Have a buyer that negotiated a price - ok.  Claimed he was a vet and wanted a discount.  Ok.  Then was surprised he had to pay sales tax, strapped for cash, yet has a site with 100's of items, >2000 reviews, many very expensive items >$2000.  They have to know about sales tax.

Then wanted me to through another item in for free.

My response was - The sale not working for you, please send a cancellation, I will approve.  they then said just ship it.

Now I am concerned that this will continue once the item is delivered (damaged whatever).

Is there a way for the seller to cancel?  I feel really uncomfortable with the buyer.  It is a high value item that I am shipping signature required.

Thanks

Thanks

Regardless of your gut feeling, If the buyer said to ship, then any cancellation is on you and you will get dinged for it.

The only cancellation reason you can choose would be for out of stock which will give you a defect against your seller account. eBay only allows so many of those before they suspend or restrict your selling.
I would ship, if the buyer has paid.

That is true, but if  the seller has no other defects on their account already, then just this one might be worth it in this sketchy situation.

This sort of escalation of expectations is why I am so ready to put members on my blocked-bidder list when they start to become annoying or demanding.

I've always wondered about this. If using 'out of stock' which is NOT accurate, as well as hurts seller, which it's not the case as the seller still has the item and will probably relist, but using 'problem with address' which could be MUCH MORE accurate because the problem is 'the person that lives at that address is a problem child' is supposedly wrong to do?

So, why wouldn't they use 'problem with address'?

A little sideways as well, as we all know you can 'block' a buyer and they just sign on a new account and then buy, same thing...seller should cancel/refund' for reason of 'problem with address' as the person that lives at that address was already blocked, and that's a problem!

eBay has very limited seller protections.

eBay always has, and always will, protect eBay first, often at the expense/detriment of/to the seller. One should always keep this in mind and be prepared to protect ones-self.

One must decide which is more important… a “defect” or a large financial loss.

@nobody*s_perfect is spot on! Too many posters will tell you if it is paid, just ship it out. Sometimes it is worth a defect (especially if your account is clean) instead of losing $1200. Be smart.

The buyer has been asking or demanding for extras that were not included in the listing. Big red flag. When they keep asking question after question, discounts etc., they usually are going to be a problem. Especially if they are bombarding the seller with messages, one after another.

Demanding something that is not in the listing is against eBay policy.

I would not hesitate to cancel, block and report the buyer. I will cancel with whatever reason I see fit for buyers like that if I know things look to be flying southward.

I have only had to do this a few times over thousands of sales, but I don't shoot myself in the foot over a problem buyer and eBay has never questioned my actions.

I also have been known to change the quantity to zero or end the listing and relist later. Out of sight, out of mind, so to speak in case they try to buy with another account.

Not telling the OP exactly what to do, just sharing my experiences......

If you are willing to take the Defect, cancel.

But.

Then wanted me to through another item in for free.

This is not allowed and could be the reason for a Defect-free cancellation.

The fact that I "refuse" to ship something makes it "OOS" as it is not available to be shipped. (to that person 😂) YMMV

Too bad we don't have a "problem with buyer" 😎 reason to cancel.

just cancel based on issue with buyer's address. Then add them to your block list.

No way would I deal with this person.

I agree with @lakefor94 . This is a textbook example of an abusive buyer. First go to the Abusive Buyer policy (link below) to report the buyer to eBay for demanding things not included in the listing, quote the policy as a reference. Then i’d cancel and take the defect if i had no other defects on my account. I’d remove the item temporarily from my listings. If the buyer complains to eBay, then the reported offense might help shield you. You can point out to eBay this was one of the rare times a cancellation was necessary.

Normally i’d say the time for assessing risk tolerance is prior to listing the item. They pay, we ship. But in this case, the buyer’s behavior merits an act to cancel on the part of the seller. Good luck.

PS—Not that you need reminded—always remain a cool and collected professional in dealings with problematic customers. Especially problematic customers.
