Did you mean:

Buyer has nothing to loose in attempting a ripoff

A buyer, upon receiving an order, can open a "Return Request" and falsely claim "It's not as described" or "It's damaged", etc...
At best the seller will just let you keep the item and give a refund.

At worst the buyer ships the item back and gets the refund and return shipping cost. So, NO LOSS.

eBay will take buyer's side in any dispute for the sake of profits.

K
You are completely right! Had this exact thing happen to us. Although the item was marked as pre-owned and pics showed wear, buyer claimed damage. I have pics showing outgoing shipment and the returned item missing parts. According to buyer “Seller had strange return requests”. Return the item in the condition received and not used by buyer is strange?  Ebay didnt care.

I opened a case as seller on the returned item damage. Ebay paid both of us. Later the buyer sent me a text (my number on shipping label) and gloated how he was paid and I was paid. Said he really just changed his mind once he saw the item in person, and didnt think I’d accept a return. Back then, I would have. I sent the texts to Ebay. Ebay said “oh, well”.

Lets be clear - all the Ebay protections are **bleep**. Ebay cares only about Ebay. I stopped doing auctions because of fees. If the questions and low ball offers from buyers are suspicious, I block them and if necessary end sale and sell elsewhere. Ebay is facilitating scammers - for a healthy profit. Dont expect any help From Customer Service. They read from a script. Any access to decision-makers to which they refer is not allowed.

They may end up in Hades, but for now, there’s no loss. Ebay doesnt care and the scammer just opens another account.

@oo8sunding,

"A buyer, upon receiving an order, can open a "Return Request" and falsely claim "It's not as described" or "It's damaged".

You sold an electronic playback device, which are very susceptible to shock damage during shipping unless very well packed. Considering the shipping cost you had on the item, I'm guessing you shipped it Parcel Select ground, which is known for rough handling.

"eBay will take buyer's side in any dispute for the sake of profits".

As a seller myself I agree with you that buyers are overly protected, and sellers have little or no recourse, until or unless they get an item back and can prove abuse of the Money Back Guarantee (MBG) protections.  All you can do to avoid issues is describe and photograph items to the Nth degree, and pack items very well.  The MBG protection is what keeps buyers coming back, yes it does mean increased profits for eBay, but it helps us sellers as well, allowing us to get good prices for our items.

I don't understand why you think this is any different on any other site.    It isn't.

I just got a return off of Amazon that says I sent the wrong fabric.    I   got the fabric back and had to refund.   The problem is that it was not the fabric I sent,  but a fabric she had bought from me 6 months earlier.

I had an INR from Amazon and even though it shows delivered,   I still had to refund.

Figure out what your returns cost,   mine as .11 per item and figure it in the selling price.    It is the cost of doing business.

If I understand you right you think a buyer should have to keep a broken item.  They paid for a working item not a broken one.

A buyer attempting a ripoff has already lost their integrity, therefore none left to lose.

The moral failing is in the attempt, not the result.

Re: Buyer has nothing to loose in attempting a ripoff

So you think that was a sermon? I am surprised the Buyer even texted me, even though my number was on the shipping label.  What did he have to gain by gloating? Had he said when he received  “now that I see it, don't like it” I would have accepted a return. Instead, engaged in the scam.   Just shows that Ebay doesn’t protect Sellers. Ebay is really just an international Craigslist site. Scammers there and on Ebay.

I find people call others “preachy” until it happens to them. Then it’s help me, help me.
