Hello, I made a thread about a week ago where I sold a VR headset and the buyer made a false return claim. So I was forced to accept the return, and as you can guess he didn't return my headset. Here's what he put in the box...
What do I do here? I can't afford to lose $1k right now. How do I get my item or my money back?

@north40sales I did indeed have it insured. I always insure packages over $100. But we both know no UPS employee is going to randomly risk their job and jail time for a random package.
@7606dennis I wanted to but I have no Idea if that same process applies to UPS mail.

Alas! No it doesn't. You will probably need to go through your local law enforcement channels.

Fml, I'm guessing I should wait until the police report is filed before starting the complaint/dispute on ebay? I only have 24hrs to respond. This is not fair at all. Buyers get a 30 day guarantee to scam sellers but "Seller Protection" gets us... nothing? 24 hrs to get a police report filed and any other process and they get a whole 30? After all this is over I think I'll be done with ebay.
They force us to accept returns and don't help us in any way with them.

File the dispute asap. File a police report soon. (Copies of paperwork)
I did a police report once. It is a formality, do not expect results from law enforcement.
Present all info possible to ebay.
Hopefully, results.

...years ago, there was UPS truck drivers here in Riverside, shook hand with thieves and sneaked all the goody packages...
...a $2k diabetes insulin self-injection machine from Kaiser was ended up at a house in Chula Vista, San Diego instead of being delivered to a patient's home in Moreno Valley, Riverside...

You are unlucky to meet a scammer.

Oh you mean like the scamming selling couple that were sending tons of junk instead of what people ordered to different addresses that were on the buyers account. Yes, if enough of these mail fraud reports are filed on the scamming buyers then I would suppose that they to will be jailed for about 20 years like these people were recently. My advice to buyer scammers, don’t try that tactic too many times.

@bbravo65 I can believe that. In that case though something like that was likely planned well in advance. I'm not going to say it's impossible in my case, but the chances are under the 10% range. The buyer had red flags all over. Fresh account, 11 feedbacks, and his report/claim itself screamed scam. I don't know what I could have done to prevent this. eBay doesn't let me decide who's authorized to buy my items, even though I don't "offer" returns eBay tells me to eat rocks, even if I win this case I'm still screwed as the buyer will leave negative feedback.
My only option is simply not doing business here. Some sellers can take a $1,000+ loss, I honestly can't. I understand why eBay wants a 30day policy but I may have to bring them to court over this.
They can't force a return policy without having a returns facility to AT LEAST inspect returns before they are sent to the seller. This has opened my eyes to the most blatant flaw I've ever seen in a platform like this. Someone can send me a bag of rocks and eBay wouldn't bat an eye. Yet if I return a bag of rocks to any store they'll open the box and give it right back before calling the cops.
We have a verification system for shoes for FREE now, why don't we have a VERIFICATION SYSTEM FOR RETURNS yet? Literally just have a department that checks the box for items. They don't even need to be experts. Just open the box, match SKUs, check serials, check if photos match the item/claim, and send it to the seller.

Hi - I feel as if someone should start a company to collect money from these scammers for a percent of the value or whatever. These thugs really need to be stopped.

...I shook my head every time I read stories like yours on this forum...
...why is just "one-way" in believing but not for the other way to prove "right" or "wrong"...???
...I knew it's online shopping but even Amazon when asking for a return or refund, you have to send back the original broken or unbroken, working or not working merchandise to Amazon warehouse...they also accept upload photos or videos as proof of evidence...and if any buyer keeps claiming lost packages, broken items, they will secretly investigate and permanently ban that buyer for life...it happened to one of my close relative member...(the guy is a crook anyway...)
...eBay solely depends on every individual sellers...but eBay doesn't bother to give extra "room" for sellers to exercise their individual business rights...eBay is giving the most benefits to buyers regardless their tenure time on eBay compare to senior sellers...if eBay can trace the IP from seller's PC to collect fees or suspend their accounts, why not tracing those scammers/buyers IP to do the same as one can register as many account as he/she wanted...yet, I question the function of reporting a buyer from eBay if that is really precisely working or it just a deceiving or misleading...
...so many posters here suggested contacting eBay from Facebook to appeal a case...did you try it yet...?
...if I got any problem, I know for sure I will eat up my lost as I am not Facebook member and I definitely won't ever register with that untrustworthy website...
...I don't know if that buyer's local law enforcement is well cooperate for your case since so many cities defunded police department and also many policemen seek for retirement or early separate...
...a same model as real estate escrow company to be a neutral inspection group on returning items from buyers whom filing INAD case is needed...that escrow department also must have an establish legal advisor on their side...and definitely eBay's employees should not participate is such a legitimate activity...
...there are people whom praise "long live the king eBay"...but time will tell if sellers keep bleeding their resources until all dry out...who would be so incompetence to be happy to lose money...???
...I don't want to say "good luck"...there is nothing to do with luck since you already lost it over that scammer/buyer and eBay CS...I would rather say "may God help you"...and I am praying for you...

Learn from this lesson.
Don't sell anything on ebay that you can't afford to lose.

Please look up his information and call the police.

that's certaily depressing.

yes. I think so. but it sure seems like eBay needs to play catch-up with the way they protect their community.
