Buyer cancels order, then asks for discount

Just when I thought I've seen it all. This guy just bought multiple items from me. He then files a cancellation request for all 4 items. Five minutes later he messages me "Please don’t cancel the order. I'm looking for a discount."

Is this a new negotiation tactic?

Is there any chance that he is looking for a shipping discount and lacks communication skills?  I would ask before making a decision as to how to proceed. You both have limited options at this point and his can be damaging to your business. Sometimes it is better to take a half step backwards and figure out what is really going on.

What bugs are you referring to specifically?

Closing all communication is never really a good idea. Could be a simple misunderstanding and easily resolved.

Re: Buyer cancels order, then asks for discount

Some of us sellers spend hours on this board discussing issues because we don't understand what the other seller is actually saying or asking. A few minutes spent finding out what a buyer is actually asking about would seem to be a small investment of time. It is not Us vs. Them.  Here in the Southwest, I see scorpions now and then and I always let them wander off on their own without stepping on them with bare feet.

Just tell him that he used up his 'discount' in the ploy, also any goodwill and courtesy as well, and in the FVF you would have to pay for full price..

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

Delayed deposits is the one I remember the most.  I forget what else.  I think some people were having problems with buyers not being able to pay also.

That isn't a bug that is by design.

Not many like that part of MP but as I understanding it they are working towards improving that time frame before the year ends.  With that said, MP isn't a new concept and isn't new information to sellers.  Sellers have been told for almost 3 years it was coming to all of us.  If cash flow is an issue, there has been plenty of time for all of us to put aside a little cushion to get us by for a few days until the cash starts flowing out of MP on a regular basis.  Even if you only put away a couple dollars a week.  By now most would likely have enough cushion to survive a couple days.

Re: Buyer cancels order, then asks for discount

I haven't moved to MP.   The first biggie was no Paypal but I understand that's now taken care of.

The next biggie for me was that you couldn't issue a partial refund to combine shipping after the buyer paid an undiscounted rate for multiple items.   I tuned out when I saw sellers being advised to tell the buyer to open a Return Case and then for the seller to offer a partial refund in the amount of the discounted shipping.

That was such a hot mess of a solution that I tuned out after that.

That's not a bug. PayPal operates in a way most other payment processors don't - they give you immediate access to funds even before they clear between the buyer's credit card and PayPal. eBay operates the way most other payment processors do which is to say they wait for the buyer's payment to clear before making the funds available to you. As posted above, sellers have had plenty of advance notice to prepare for this change.

I've never had an issue with buyers not being able to pay unless they're international customers. At this time the only way for international customers to pay is to log in to the .com site and pay using PayPal. That will change as eBay expands later this year with more international payment options.

eBay added the ability to send partial refunds last year so this is no longer an issue.

It's extortion, report him to ebay. I would call the 'trust and safety' dept at Ebay and also report him by selecting it on the drop down menu. if he leaves neg FB you probably will be able to remove it. Call them first and write down who you spoke to and what they say . I would do what mam98031 suggested as well.
