Buyer asks for something not in listing

I sold an item and in a note the seller asked for something not in the listing. I did not want to accommodate the added request and so messaged the buyer. I said that I would cancel the transaction. I went to cancel and there were only 2 reasons offered-- out of stock /damaged and buyer requested cancellation. I checked buyer requested cancellation because I assumed because I could not do what buyer asked, buyer would want to cancel. I recall that there used to be more reasons. When buyer asks for extras not in listing how do we cancel ?

What were the 'extras'?

I can't remember but other here will...what can seller do without getting a negative potential feedback from buyer on canceling a sale?

I think you were premature in cancelling and wrong to lie about the reason.

You should have responded to the buyer's question/request with "the listing shows what is being sold and includes nothing else." Then you should have WAITED for the buyer to respond with their answer to whether they want to cancel.  Deciding for yourself to cancel and choosing "buyer requested" when they didn't request was wrong.

If the buyer reports you, that can impact your ability to sell here.

That seems a little abrupt. I might also have said No, depending of course on what the request was (you didn't say), but I would follow by asking the buyer whether he wanted to cancel.

Did their message indicate they didn't want the item without the extras?  I wouldn't have assumed they didn't want it at all unless they made that clear in writing.   I don't mess around with iffy cancellations.

When they start asking for extras or price cuts after they purchase, you get into a risky sales area where the buyer might try to take advantage after delivery.

I usually try to get the buyer to ask to cancel. If that fails, I have in the past years, slam dunked a couple and just noted in a message to the buyer that they were asking for items not included in the listing and that was against eBay policy and that I was cancelling the order for that reason while selecting, buyer asked to cancel.

Never ever heard a word from eBay.

Buyer asks for something not in listing

Bosco,

Let's not 'assume' anything here. Buyer requests "something" not included in a purchase/listing. You proceeded with a cancellation of transaction for reasons other than what was listed, which were the two options available.

   a. item was out of stock/damaged

   b. buyer requested cancellation

The item description are your terms/contract and what is included with your product.

You may have wanted to ask the buyer how they would like to proceed, ie; cancellation of sale, proceed with the sale, etc. It just appears perhaps you may have been somewhat abrupt in your decision of "buyer requested cancellation" when clearly your post doesn't say that. Wishing you the best on this one

Without the specifics of the buyer's request, one cannot offer a response or opinion as to whether the cancellation was justifed.

Another seller saw what he thought was beyond the promise of the listing on another recent thread.

It was not beyond the promise of the listing, it was normal professional behavior that the buyer expected.
