Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

Buyer purchased product then requested a refund. Followed Ebay program to send refund. Buyer has not returned product.  So - Buyer now has ($99.00) refund plus a ($3.85) return lable  and the ($99.00) product. How is this equitable? How will Ebay Handle this? (This situation  never happened with PayPal.)

Re: Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

The seller is supposed to wait until he has received back the item in question before he sends the refund.

Appeal the case if the tracking does not show delivered to you.

Re: Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

Program is...............................     to return an item, and then be refunded.

Was it done that way?

When was the buyer refunded?

Who refunded the buyer?

Return labels provide through eBay are not charged until used.

Re: Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

the situation happened because you must have been unfamiliar with the return procedure

some ebayers are very familiar with exactly how they take place

ebay acts in a very predictable  manner in regards to returns

its all spelled out in the MBG

if you consistently read the boards then you can figure out how things work

you shoud have followed the rules for a return........not a refund

you coud try sending the buyer an invoice thru paypal

good luck

Re: Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

EBAY rules say do NOT give refund "until after you get item back".    If you gave immediate refund (customer will NOT bother returning your item).   Sorry this happened to you....but you need to understand how EBAY policies work.

Your only option now is to politely ask the customer to return the item.   EBAY will NOT help if customer "refuses to return item" because you didn't follow the rules.

If you refunded the buyer before you recieved the return, then you were not following the eBay "program" for returns.

eBay does not have the ability to claw back a refund from a buyer, and the cannot force a buyer to return an item.

BTW, the same was true under the old PayPal system too.

PayPal vs. MP has nothing to do with knowing how to handle a return, which you clearly don't. Buyer requests return, buyer returns item, seller sends refund.

If you used that  return procedure under PayPal and didn’t end up losing the money and item, then you were very lucky.

@gypsyal

If you refunded the buyer before they shipped the item back, the case is closed and Ebay won't do anything.

Have a great day.

Re: Buyer Scam under the new Ebay program.

Seems to me the Ebay return program is set up to accomplish just that. It tell you to authorise a return, send the buyer postage - then leaves you hanging, by closing the case.  Wow, what great folks to put your trust in.......

The return system works like it has for years.

You accept the return, provide return shipping and wait for the item to be returned, then refund the buyer.

Have a great day.

Here's my question - did the buyer open a return request via eBay returns? That's not 100% clear from your original message.

If you were in the eBay returns section, it should have been very clear that you had three options - buyer keeps the item and you refund without requiring a return, second one is accept the return and send the buyer a label via eBay for the item to be returned, and third offer a partial refund.

Does the return show as open or closed? If it still shows as open, the buyer has not been refunded yet. What is different from the PP days is that eBay immediately puts the funds that buyer paid on hold while the return sorts itself out. If the return is still open, eBay is holding the funds basically in escrow. eBay gives buyers an insane amount of time to send the item back. If the buyer never sends it back, after about a month you can request the return be closed and the funds will be returned to you.

But - if you selected the first option by mistake, or went to the transaction and initiated a refund that way, you're out of luck. eBay can be good about protecting sellers for items not returned, but you've got to follow the steps exactly.

It might be worth reaching out to eBay customer service via Twitter or Facebook DMs for clarification - they tend to be a bit better than the random ones you get either on the phone or online chat. I've had the online ones contradict themselves in the same chat and they still won't acknowledge it.

Where in the process you described does it say, "refund the money before the buyer returns the item"? You clearly say, "authorize a RETURN", not "authorize a REFUND". You authorize the REFUND after the item is returned. eBay never told anyone to refund first.
