So I have been on Ebay almost 20 years. Used to sell here and there, getting back into it. I have a buyer that purchased a used vintage Panasonic tv vhs. It was working just fine when I shipped it. The buyer received it and has had it in their possession 18 days. Now they are trying to return it as defective? So what can I do? I am 100% positive it worked when I sent it. I am sure in the 18 days they had it they broke it. I know if I spent over $100 on something and it came broke I would do something about it right away? Any help is appreciated.

Either accept the return and refund (still in 30 days of eBay MBG)
Or refund and let buyer keep item

Sorry but there is no way out of this. Buyer gets to return an item if it is defective. This is just good business practice. It could be abused but I will not shop at a place without this policy. That is what the buyer is claiming here as reason for return. Accept the return. They should however return it to you in the same condition as they receive it. In some instances what a buyer may claim as defect is simply them not understanding how a feature of the product works. They are cases where they have actually damaged the item and are trying to send it back for their money. Ebay does allow some sellers to deduct up to 50% of the order total if a buyer return an item that is damaged and not in the original condition they received it. It may not be the case with you. Even if you do have this authority, this particular return may not fall under that. You wouldn't know until the item is sent back to you. Good Luck.

Ebay is known to many scammers as a free rental site. Just got to go through the motions. Tis the season. I go all year with easy transactions, nice customers. Understanding and then wham. Fall hits and they come out of the woodwork. I used to shut down for the fall. Start back up after Christmas. I'm roughing it this year.

If the buyer is claiming it's defective, you'll have to accept the return and pay return shipping if you want it back before refunding.

Used electronics can fail at any time if not properly restored.
That said; such is also used for repairing other stuff and you get your item back with out parts, or with bad parts.....free parts in other words, and its a scam on the Internets that does go on.
You have no way to prove it worked, so its :
return for refund or
refund with out return....

You sold a used electronic item.
You shipped a used electronic item.
It was recieved and after 18 days (possibly of trying to make it work we don't know) the buyer has asked for a refund because it will not work (for him).
Human nature at work. He overestimated his skills. And he needed some brooding time over the purchase.
As others have said, you can pay for him to return it and then refund or you can tell him to trash it and refund immediately.
Not every sale will go perfectly.
It helps to build up a small reserve to cover your losses - this self-insurance is sometimes called Cookie Jar Insurance.
Also, any loss, is a tax deduction when you declare your eBay profits at income tax time. The IRS I understand is now demanding that venues like eBay and AZ send information about any seller who receives more than $600 annually in sales income. (Income is not profit.)

It doesn't matter who's telling the truth or whether the item truly is broken or not.
If the buyer files a "damaged/not working/not as described" claim, you only have 3 options...
A) Accept the return. Pay the return shipping. Refund the buyer in full when you get the item back.
B) Refund the buyer. Let him keep the broken item.
C) Deny the return. Ebay will find in the buyers favor. Ebay will refund the buyer with your funds. Ebay will not require the buyer to return the item. You'll get a serious strike against you.
