Business Account = No Seller Protection According to Ebay Support. Is this true?

I just got off the phone with an E-bay tech. support person who told me that because we are a "business account" based upon the fact we do 100+ transactions per year that seller protection policies do not apply to us. An item damaged in return transit has to be counted as a "cost of doing business"  according to her.  Anyone ever heard this before?

Background: A buyer returned an item that was damaged due to poor packing for the return trip. No mention of any damage from the buyer prior to return. The buyer claimed functional problems which after testing the returned item proved to be untrue. It really sounds like buyer' s remorse in this instance.

I'd certainly doubt that comment.  eBay's return policy allows a few days to inspect the item in case there is a possibility of damage on return.  They suggest negotiating with the buyer???? That being said, the policy states

" If you're unsuccessful, report the buyer to us.

We take these reports seriously, and will carry out a thorough investigation before taking any appropriate action. To protect the privacy of our members, we're unable to inform you of any actions we may take against another member."

Nothing there about any remuneration for the seller. I guess they've covered themselves to doing nothing.

The ONLY seller protection Ebay has ever offered to ANY seller is protection from items not received if you have a tracking number stating delivered.

Any other "protection" is up to you. Yes, loss is a cost of doing business.  You need to take a percentage of each sale and set it aside to cover any losses from shipping damage or fraud. You know, just like B&M businesses do.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

The eBay rep is lying... again.

Being a business account has zero to do with no seller protection. All sellers are basically subject to no seller protection.

As pointed out before, the only "protection" you have is if you get a non- delivery claim but you can prove delivery. Other than that, it's well documented that the buyer can send back a brick or a phone book and the seller gets to refund.

Chaos is NOT an "industry standard".

Regardless of what their policy implies, eBay Seller Protection does not cover any seller for damage during shipping in either direction. If you read the policy carefully, you will find that all sellers agree to let eBay make the final decision.

Not correct...

When an item is returned to the seller

Not correct...

When an item is returned to the seller

  • The buyer must return the item in the same condition in which it was received.

We all know that is one of those things that ebay never enforces. A buyer can ship back an empty box in lieu of the item sent, get a refund, and keep the item for free.  Sellers get the "part of doing business on the net" nonsense as they throw you under the bus.

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt and burned it.  Sell elsewhere.  Other sites have scammer buyers, but most of us got a good EDUCATION here, and can deal with these issues so long as the venue does not have access to your payments.   Have a happy ebay day!

And from the eBay User Agreement user agreement:

eBay Money Back Guarantee
"You agree to comply with the policy and permit us to make a final decision on any eBay Money Back Guarantee case."

You have to read all the policies, not just one.
