Borders, Frames and Watermarks on Photos - Is it Allowed or Not?

I remember sometime ago that eBay announced that watermarks, badges, texts, frames, and borders etc would no longer be allowed.

It caused quite the stir and thousands of sellers had to revise listings.

However, I see tons of new sellers still doing it. I guess that eBay is not being strict on their policy?

It is not allowed and yes some people still do it.

Speeding is not allowed and some people still do it.

Some people get caught and some don't.

Just do us all a favor. If you get caught don't pester us with whines about how "unfair" it is that others got away with it.

Badges, text, frames/borders have been against policy for a long time. Removing watermarks was a more recent change, but they rolled back the policy so watermarks are discouraged but they are technically still allowed. Google shopping does not like watermarks and usually doesn't show those items in search results, so you may want to keep that in mind.

Here are the policy no-no’s:

Not allowed

  • Including photos that don't accurately represent the item
  • Placeholder images used to convey messages, such as no image available, or out of stock, or other marketing messages
  • Stock photos for used, damaged or defective items
  • Adding borders to your photos
  • Using a picture that is less than 500 pixels on the longest side
  • Adding additional text, artwork, or marketing to photos
  • Watermarks of any type, including those used for ownership attribution
