They don't help you unless you offer them.......  some buyers "want" free shipping and "want" an item by Sat for a party.....  sellers that offer those things are going to make those sales.

Personally I pay for all returns no matter what reason, haven't had too many to make me want to change that in 2-3 years.  Just avoiding the headache of having to fight with someone is worth it to me.

Under present circumstances, ebay expects you to "suck it up",,,and pay for return shipping simply because the "buyer lied"  I.e. made a mistake in the return flow.   LOL....You can send the right item, the item that was advertised, but it will not help you so long as you have a return policy and your buyer claims SNAD.

The new "free return" program allows the buyer NOT to have to lie anymore.   That is all.  If you subscribe to the
free returns

You, as a seller, still need to suck it up from below board buyers, only this time they don't get a strike for sending back a rubber band instead of the 14K bracelet you sent.  Indeed, have a happy ebay day.

I don't know, because I do not know your business model. But if it does not help, it costs nothing and takes no time for a wise seller to completely ignore it.

No one does. A wise seller knows that free shipping has nothing to do with the cost of shipping - it simply means that the buyer pays him $15 ($15 plus $0 shipping) instead of paying him $15 ($10 plus $5 shipping).

WHAT TO DO WHAN A BUYER ORDERS WRONG ITEM AND EXPECTS YOU TO PAY RETURN SHIPPING BY STATING "WRONG ITEM SENT"??

You lose the case. And if it happens often enough, a wise seller will build a reserve for it into his business model.

I think sellers will sell more if buyers like buying from those sellers.

They also buy more when sellers sell below cost.  But, that doesn't always help the seller.

Free return doesn't mean the correct or undamaged item will be returned. I see it only as an opportunity for scammers.

I would think it's pretty obvious that something that makes buyers happy encourages them to buy more and Ebay sellers will benefit.

Selling should not be an adversarial relationship, it should be a partnership. It should be mutually beneficial.

the problem with this is that free shipping is not also beneficial to sellers dependent on the cost of shipping compared the value of the item

Food for thought, thank you all for responding to my query. Part of the problems are ignorance on buyers part, part of the problem is ignorance (lack of sufficient information) on my part. We'll carry on.
