so I started a return request for a defective item and the seller responded saying that they will send me a replacement item and that I don't have to send the defective item back. They then asked me to close the return request but I'm obviously not going to do that that because I know what happens if I do. My question is what happens if this replacement item also doesn't work? I have been given a shipping label to return the initial item, am I supposed to use that to return the replacement? How would I go about getting my refund then IF both of them are defective?

Don't close it.
They won't be sending you another item.
Use the shipping label you received and return the one item and you'll get a refund.

That is why it's best to ask for a refund and not a replacement. You need to send the item back as soon as you can with that label. Never close a case as it can't ever be reopened. You should receive a refund once they get the first item back.

Good question and you have good replies already.
Just let them know that after this one is returned/refunded, you would consider buying another one. (if you want it) If they agree, the next purchase will be protected just like you were on this one. Keep them separate and good luck.

Were you advised by eBay to return the item for a full refund? If so I believe you'll be expected to return the item by a certain date and could run into problems if you don't. The seller could claim you never returned the item despite what they said to you.
The seller needs to refund you right away since they aren't expecting a return. Personally I would want my refund and nothing else from a seller who was hoping I'd close my case and have no options on eBay when they try to cheat me.
If you do want to continue with this seller; tell them to issue the refund and that you'll repurchase their item later so that you remain protected in case it's also defective.

yes eBay is saying that I have until April 30 to send the item back. I have told the seller that I wasn't going to cancel the request until I receive the replacement and make sure it's working properly! They said ok and sent me a tracking number. I tracked it with usps and it's legit, same location and all. It took a little less than a week to get the first item so I'm looking to receive the replacement around April 21-23. This means I would still have a whole week to send the item back for a refund if it still doesn't work. I believe just sending the first item back would be enough for a refund because that's what the shipping label is specifically for. (correct me if I am wrong)
I know this isn't how someone with common sense would go about doing this but seeing as they already shipped the item and I would still have time to return it, I have a good feeling I can still get my refund if it doesn't work. I will keep track of the package to make sure it's not taking longer to arrive. It's just that buying the item again would feel like a longer process.
I really appreciate the help from you and the others by the way, if I ever experience this again I would know to not take this route and just get the refund.
