Way overcharged on return shipping. How do I get a refund?

I purchased an item from China for $60 that did not work.

I opened a return for the item and was given a return address label to a place in Deleware (USA).

The item, approx. wt 6oz (that's just six ounces), in a box that was 2 inches x 2 inches x 3 inches was shipped via priority mail using the provided label.

It was one of those labels where eBay says they will charge you based on actual shipping cost.

The item arrived in Delaware and I was issued a refund for $10. Ebay claims it cost $50 to ship it to Deleware.

I'm guessing their algorithm charged me for shipping back to the country of origin (China) and didn't account for the return label being for a domestic (USA) address.

I estimate the actual shipping cost to be around $3.00 USD.

How do I get a refund on the ridiculous shipping fees?

Does ebay actually calculate shipping cost after an item has shipped, or is it all a scam? I'm beginning to think that the 'we calculate shipping cost once scanned by USPS' thing is a big lie.

This board is useless.

For anybody reading this in the future, eBay scammed me out of my money and refuses to refund anything. I could have shipped a box of bricks for less than $50. My <1lb item cost nowhere near that.

Just accept your loss and move on.

Last of all @katielyse86 when an item did not work, the seller pays for return shipping to anywhere in the world.

First, completely do not talk to the seller. Then to get the remainder of your refund, file an additional return request here at PayPal, if that's how you paid. Then when told to return the item, upload the return tracking number already delivered back, to get your refund.

Otherwise, call the number on the back of your card and file a "Credit not processed" chargeback if that's how you paid, and provide the return tracking number already delivered back, to get the rest of your refund.

What was the reason for the return request? Did you choose that the item wasn't as described?

It sounds like you chose a remorse reason rather than a NAD (not as described) reason.

I'm not complaining about having to pay shipping costs.

The amount I was charged for shipping (by eBay) was nearly 10x higher than it should have been. The seller didn't get to keep the money; ebay stole it all.

The minimum package size is 6" x 3" x  1/4"

Was the package forwarded to China from the freight forwarder in Delaware? Mailing something to China tracked costs a minimum of $50.

Priority shipping to DE is not $3.00. You can’t even ship a first class package for $3.00.

Yes, their 'estimate' is what they will actually charge you.  I bought multiple items (SEPARATE ORDERS, SAME DAY) from the same seller who shipped all in one package through UPS @ $31.27.    I returned ONE piece and was honest in saying it just wasn't the color I had expected and agreed to pay the return shipping.  I saw the estimate for $75.56 and the message, 'we calculate shipping once USPS scans the label' and thought, Ok the estimate is way off, I'll ask when I get there.   Do Note that I had NO choice in the label being a USPS Priority Return even though it came UPS from the beginning.  Fine, so I asked when at USPS and they said it would be about $28 (probably because it was Priority) so I still agreed to return the $79 item because I knew I would simply never use it.......... a few days Later, I get my message saying I got a refund !!     but was charged the 'estimate' of $75.56 so I got a few bucks back.     If I had known this I would have just kept that leather and Maybe used it some day.   I'M SURE I GOT CHARGED TO SHIP THE WHOLE ORDER BACK PRIORITY based off the original order weight and now being a 'priority return'.  There's no communication between USPS and UPS.   3 phone calls to eBay CS and they keep throwing it back on taking up claim w/ USPS to get credit.    Trouble is I need the return tracking# to even inquire or dispute and there is no where to find that in my purchase history or anywhere on site.  CS gives me a tracking number that is INVALID.   So now I have to call them back a 4TH time and see if they can manage to give me the correct one.   Even then this is looking like an exercise in futility, at what point do you just give up and move on...................

You aren't required to use the ebay return label for a return.  If the estimate costs seems off then purchase a label on your own.

I can't explain why or how they figure out the return cost but I do know that it is wrong to state that the return is not as described when it is actually a buyer's remorse reason.  Not only is the seller out shipping both ways but they are also penalized if they received too many not as described claims.

You do understand Priority mail is not media mail that you can estimate for $3.00 right? Flat Rate starts at $8.55 for small to $19.90 for the commercial rate (likely ebay price) vs. the window pricing ($10.20 - $22.80). The variable priority mail service is dependent upon weight, size & destination like all other mail. Return service may also carry its own price list.

While $50 may be a bit much, it is worth an appeal for more info. However, this is not a $3 return - sorry.
