Seller Mixing eBay returns process and USPS Claim Process

I purchased 4 Ralph Lauren glasses as a set. When the box arrived one of the glasses was broken. It was clear the seller did their best to package the item carefully, but the box was dented on one side when it arrived.

I quickly message the seller letting them know that one of the glasses was damaged, so I was opening a return. I told the seller that I would like to return the three glasses for a refund. They were extremely understanding and said that they were going to file a claim with USPS through eBay messages and approve my return.

Here is why I need advice. After sending those messages (and expecting to return the items), I get a message from the seller saying they apparently needed to file a USPS claim in person vs. online, so to hold onto the box and items - yet they refunded me in full through eBay tonight.

From my understanding, once they give a full refund I can’t send the glasses back. Which I would like to do….. but clearly not out of my own pocket. Is the case pretty much closed and I just let the seller know the items can’t be return since they already refunded?

Re: Seller Mixing eBay returns process and USPS Claim Process

From what I have experienced with USPS claims is the buyer needs to take the damage item to the post office and get it verified as damaged. It used to be that the buyer could just send pictures of the box and broken item, but now the item has to be verified . Your seller should file the claim and give you the claim info. You then will need to take to the post office. The post office can either keep the item of have you dispose of them.

The buyer will refund you and hopefully USPS will pay the seller on the claim.

If the seller plans on filing an insurance claim, they refund the buyer in full and have them hang on to the item and package.

You hang on to the item and package it in case USPS need to inspect it.

Have a great day.

Okay, so basically I keep the items and received the refund. If the claim is approved the seller is paid by USPS?

Re: Seller Mixing eBay returns process and USPS Claim Process

I am the buyer, and I have not filed a claim through USPS. I did however file a return through eBay and was refunded fully by the seller. I’m specifically just asking what to do with the items in the box? But looking at other responses I am to keep the item.
