I sold something a while back that went to an authenticator then the buyer. Buyer was unhappy and opened a return case. I would like the buyer to be happy with the purchase. The return case was made back around July 28th. I have access to the funds. I do not want to use the money until the return case is solved though. Curious what the longest wait time is on these? I've tried to reach out to ebay about the issue but the process seems very convoluted and unnecessarily complicated. Thanks in advance. This is about all I can see when viewing the issue. "

I just had my first return case. The funds were held back by EBAY until resolved. It took about 3 weeks as they had to ship my items back. EBAY refunded them from my funds, it did not go against my record and was easy.

Also as I have the standard no return policy the customer can always request a return. Make sure you accept it. It helps if you try to rectify through EBAY mail first because they see that. EBAY sends them the shipping label and gives them a date to return your item.

Does your return case show a date they have to return by?

Did you accept the return? When you accept a buyers return, it should also as @fern*wood wrote, state “buyer has until such n such date” to return item. If you do not see this, then it would seem that maybe you didn’t actually accept the return?

HistoryJul 28Jul 28The case openedJul 28Jul 28Buyer requested a return
If it went to the authenticator then the return goes back there too.
I have found that in a noticeable percentage of return requests the buyer never ships the item back.
I would just put it out of your mind unless it is such an amount of money that it will cause financial stress.

So I am supposed to hit the button for the return? How will I know they are going to ship the item back?

In california here. Not sure if it is any different. But I didn't see anything that mentions accept or deny return. I would have gladly accepted though. 😞

Whenever I’ve had a return, eBay says “buyer wants to return” and will bring me to a page that gives me options, to accept/deny and to be able to send return label.
Did this item go to authentication and if not, do you accept returns buyer pays or free returns?
As @onefootflipper mentioned, only a fraction of people who open returns will actually return the item.

No. There was no date. 😕 Just a pending please wait type of thing...

So possibly the buyer wanted me to do the return but they didn't want to ship the item back to the authenticator? It is $250 USD so I would like to have the funds soonish. >_< I have them just don't feel comfortable using them? I'd also like to sell something else but if this return goes through I won't have to fill out a tax form so I might hold off. >_< haha.

In your listing, did you offer returns or did you say no returns? If you offer returns, is it free returns or buyer pays returns?
My listings offer 30-day returns where the buyer pays to ship it back, so when someone opens a return, ebay automatically approves it and tells me that the buyer has a certain amount of time to send the item back. If they actually send it back, I'll get a notification of when it's been shipped. I don't have to do anything until I receive the item back.
In some cases, like mentioned above, you have to manually accept the return.
And you said : "So I am supposed to hit the button for the return? How will I know they are going to ship the item back?"
Don't confuse "return" with "refund". If they ask you to accept the return, say yes. But don't refund any money until you receive the item back.

You will be filling out the tax form either way. It doesn't subtract your returns from your revenue taken in, you do that when you fill out your schedule C.
If they don't want to send them to the authenticator and wants to ship them directly back to you then that is a red flag right there.

You won't. But you do not need to refund unless/until you receive it back.

Can you quote your source for your statement that in a noticeable percentage of return requests the buyer never ships the item back? Are there statistics somewhere?
