Sold a car part to a guy who claims it doesn't work, apparently isn't smart enough to install or test it right, it worked fine when I sent it out. I wouldn't even have listed it if it didn't work, I would have returned it to where I got it (had a 30 day warranty) or listed it as a core given it's a harder to find item.
That's neither here nor there I guess, I can just sell it again unless he broke it somehow. But this time I will make video of it showing it working.
What is odd is I sat down this morning to see the nastygram telling me I have a return so I go in and look at it, and there is no option for me to issue a label. The return was approved automatically, and there is a 9301xxxxx etc. tracking showing which sounds like a return label number. Apparently now even that is issued automatically? Or perhaps because they chose "defective" as a reason.
I wonder how much I'm going to get assaulted for on that. The item was shipped medium flat rate because it was about 1/3 the price and easily fit the box. Does the return shipping label get calculated based on what I actually shipped, or what the listing details show for weight and size? I know it's discounted from regular rates.
I expect they will return it in the same box I sent it out in, too, who knows what issues that will cause. You can get away with using a flat rate box for calculated postage if you block off all the bar codes and "flat rate" wording on the box but I doubt buyer will do this.

Let me note I charged the customer for the medium flat rate also.

Odd situation generally when a buyer opens a refund/return request you receive a note as the seller and have a number of choices on how to handle the refund/return but not sure what the buyer chose as a reason so the process may be automated including the issuance of the return label.
You should be able to put the tracking number into the USPS system and find out what type of label was issued, I am guessing it was the same type you used to send the package in the medium flat rate box. Once you receive the return you may not have an option to inspect prior to eBay issuing the refund automatically this whole scenario is a bit stranger than the norm. They will refund the buyer 100% of what they paid including the cost of the postage. You should see the cost of the return label in your transaction report which eBay has probably already taken from your account (PayPal or Bank).

"Or perhaps because they chose "defective" as a reason."
Return labels are discounted through Pitney Bowes but I don't know how they calculate the rate. They come Priority Mail even though the tracking doesn't begin with the same numbers.
eBay says I have two days from when it arrives to issue a refund. But we all know it doesn't matter if they send back a box of rocks, if you don't refund them eBay will anyways.

I've stopped selling on eBay for just this reason. As a seller you are totally at the mercy of the buyer with no recourse for fraud from eBay. Buyer sends you back a box of rocks and you complain to eBay (though some call centre in the Philippines) you get no help and the thieves get their money back AND your part. Selling on eBay can be a nightmare and not worth it....especially now that they decided to eliminate PayPal as a payment receipt option. My only questions is ..."where's the competition"?

I would guess you have return automated so it was accepted automatically and buyer used defective etc. so the label was generated automatically. The Usps weighs/measures package in route and charges after delivery

A video showing it works is a waste of time. That's not proof of anything except it was working when the video was made. It could have been dropped or damaged during transit. The buyer could have ordered the wrong part. If they say it doesn't work you will be forced to refund.

My "returns" label postage with an eBay "return service" label has always been the same cost as what I paid for the label when shipping the item.
As I understand it, return labels are now automatic for those sellers "accepting returns". You can set it up to require a return authorization # for returns, and that will stop the "automatic" label.

true- ebay will always give full refund back to the buyer and drop the ball on the seller no matter what-we just had a situation where we fully refunded a buyer for a item that was out of stock immediately and then the buyer was refunded then they started a case "didnt recieve item".. well ebay just went ahead and refunded again another full refund from us so we lost out on the first refund... when you call to ask whats up.. their response is.."thats the cost of doing business"... alotta **bleep** buyers taking advantage of ebays butt kissing buyer refund-return policy... and the sellers loose out... always.....

I suspect that your part was perfectly fine and you are going to get their old part back.
