Fishing for a partial refund

"Hi, there's an issue with my order. These were advertised and sold as the satin finish. I couldn't tell by the photo. However most of them are not satin. They're the glossy finish. I'm very disappointed. I could have gotten glossy ones on Amazon (different brand but looks just like the original Cambridge). I couldn't tell from the photos but it's obvious in person. I'm so disappointed! Typically the glossy ones are easier to find and sell for substantially less. These don't match what I am looking for. The finish was very important to me."

Hi, I've sold this popular satin pattern many times. If you initiate a return and pick not as described the return shipping label will be charged to my account.  I double checked the other pieces of this set that were listed the same day (#305219148711) and they appear satin to me.  Returns are hassle free. I refund the day I get it back. Regards

Hi, I'll think about it over the weekend.I'm not able to look at them right now but for example, all three knives are definitely glossy, the dinner fork is too.I'm not comparing them to anything I currently have. I'm in the process of replacing a set I had until 5 years ago when I filed for divorce. Your order is the first of a series of orders I placed to replace my previous set. There are at least a couple of the ones I ordered that look like glossy ones that are just worn and could pretty easily be mistaken for the satin finish. But I had and used mine for over 20 years and there's a distinct difference between the satin and glossy finish even when well worn.Anyway, I appreciate your help. I'll think about it for a couple days. It's a hassle looking for them, they're not easy or cheap especially when replacing a service for 12. (I'm stopping at 8 for now 😜)Would you consider offering a small price adjustment if I decided to keep them?Thank you.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

They are definitely satin not glossy. I suspect if you tell her that you don't do partial refunds but she can return them all for a refund she will disappear.

Maybe her eyes aren't as good as they used to be but the first photo is clearly all satin finish.

Tell her if she can't see herself in the metals reflection it is satin finish. If she sees herself it's the glossy finish, just like I can see you in your glossy example 🙂

I never do partial refunds.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

I'm sorry but my manager wont allow partial refunds.

But of you would like to return them I'd be happy to assist.

Or

I already sold them at the lowest I could. Anything less & I would be selling at a loss.

Happy to refund after return.

Or something like that..

IMO they are full of baloney or as suggested their eyesight is VERY bad.

These knives were just sold and may be sent back to me as mine in a switcharoo.  I reported her message along with the item number for these knives to see if she purchased them.   Years ago eBay was transparent and you could tell that information yourself.

Ohhh NOOOO!!!

I hope & pray it's not that.

Were those a lot less than yours?

Geeze, I hope the "buyer" just accepts they're not getting a partial and goes away.

You can tell they want to keep them.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

My satin finish lot sold for $105 and the glossy knives sold for $16.   Most of the old glossy stuff from the 60's - 80's acquires a satin finish over the decades.

"I'm not able to look at them right now"

She didn't want to look at the sister lot to the set which is also satin finished.  Wonder why?  It's obviously satin and she likely did look at it.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

Wow that's a big price difference.

I'll restate I hope & pray she's not trying to switch on you. That would be awful.

Are you TRS or whatever it is that can deduct 50% at least?

You even offering to pay for return shipping... If she scams you I'm gonna be mad.

They are quite lovely.. I really like the satin finish.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

I remember when you could look up any ID and see what they bought not just what they sold.   It was easier to catch cheaters in those days.

SSShhhhh  Don't tell... But...

Perhaps you could message that seller and ask them if it shipped to city/state without saying the buyers name?

Or is that against the rules?

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

It seems like a gray area.  I wouldn't want to get myself in trouble and wouldn't be comfortable dragging another seller into it.  I did report the glossy knives item number with the email solicitation for a partial refund.  I'll wait and see how it plays out before I report the buyer, that's a separate entity from just reporting an email.  You only get one chance in reporting a buyer but in reporting the emails there's multiple opportunities.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

That's a good point.  My reflection only shows up when the items are glossy.  It's trickier and takes twice as long to get images of the glossy stuff.  I know if I have satin stuff to photograph it only takes a minute or two.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

I was just reminded about the infamous eBay tea kettle incident from decades ago.  It must have been one of the first online 'incidents' to go viral.  If you don't remember a seller took a picture of a stainless steel tea kettle in their birthday suit which was visible in the listing.  There was much speculation as to if it was intentional but after years of working with photographing stainless steel I doubt it was.  Getting a usable image of a shiny object is a complicated process.

Re: Fishing for a partial refund

It might be a good idea to ask them what they mean by small price adjustment. Why overthink it? The buyer just could be overwhelmed with the purchase (divorce reminder) and may ask for a few dollars. It does not mean you have to do it but at least you know.
