Had a return, it's supposedly been mailed, and Ebay is now telling me it's been delivered.
It hasn't, and the buyer provided an invalid USPS tracking number. Ebay wants me to issue a refund by COB today. Basically the only options I'm given in the return are either issue a refund or report a problem that is either buyer returned the wrong item or there is some other problem with the returned item. There is no option for this situation.
I guess this is a CS call?

@baantiques
Basically, since USPS was used you are unable to find online the information you need if eBay is claiming the "tracking shows delivered" for a return to you and you don't have the parcel.
Sometimes parcels are misdelivered. On occasion, packages can be marked "delivered" prematurely and your parcel arrives the next day. Other times the return is simply a scam, with the buyer returning a parcel with tracking to an address (not yours) in your zipcode to satisfy the return requirements.
Is the tracking related to the return label you provided?
Do you have the tracking number used for this return, and it is showing "invalid" on the USPS website?
Have you received a parcel lately that contained something from another vendor that you did not order?

I was hit with the same issue last summer. I hope eBay will address this issue.
The seller really needs the tracking number so they can watch for it. If the seller is paying for the return, they have the right to get the tracking number.
My guess the buyer printed the label and then probably pasted a different "ship to" address. Probably a friend or a bogus address and I'm sure the return item was not in the package. Probably just a filler / junk.

I did not provide a return label. This is a voluntary return not an INAD and I don't have free returns. The Ebay info says the tracking number is a USPS number, but it returns the following when entered at the USPS site:
Status Not Available
The tracking number may be incorrect or the status update is not yet available. Please verify your tracking number and try again later.
Normal USPS tracking numbers have 22 digits. This one has 12. Also, the package was coming from Switzerland so it seems unlikely they were able to send it USPS.
I guess I'll have to sit on the phone with CS to straighten this out, unless there is an easy workaround. I kind of doubt that, I've never seen anything like this and I've been at this a while.

Have you looked up the other tracking number?
Sometimes it'll show the USPS tracking number on the page.

Enter @baantiques that short tracking number at ship24.com to identify the carrier, then contact that carrier (FedEx?) to ask if it's your address.

Says not found. I think it's either a partial or he just typed in some random numbers

Got on with customer service and they couldn't find the correct number either so they closed it in my favor.
Thanks for the replies.
