Question,
Buyer opened a return for an item I don't accept returns on (doesn't fit). The item had free shipping. I know if I accept the return the buyer will have to pay the return shipping, but can I deduct the original shipping once I receive the item and issue the refund? I was thinking that I can only deduct from the refund if the item was returned not in original condition, missing tag, etc.

No, you cannot deduct original shipping nor charge a 'restocking' fee. If you had a 'charge' for the original shipping to the customer, you would have had the option to NOT refund that portion (on a 'remorse' return, whether you accept returns or not).
You do have the option of NOT approving the return for a 'remorse' reason because you have 'no returns'.
If you approve the return, then Yes, you can deduct "up to" 50% of the refund if (and ONLY if) it is returned in 'less than' condition (of which you will have to supply a photo of, and a brief 'reason' and that is something that should NOT be taken advantage of, or ebay will stop you from using it (if it's NOT 'less than' etc.)

I wasn't going to lie and say it was defective, I just wanted to know if there was a way to deduct original shipping.
I'm lucky, I get very few returns so I was not sure of my options.

No return doesn't mean no return...buyer can return the item.
As far as who pays return...it depends how buyer opened the return...item not as described you have to pay return...
And if you do nothing in the claim time frame on your own...buyer can keep item without you getting a refund.
And too many emails back and forth between you and buyer...buyer might not leave a happy feedback...so careful how you respond to this buyer.
