Buyer allowed too much time to return item

I truly don't understand the reasoning behind allowing a buyer 3 weeks to return an item.

Sellers only have 2 days to respond to a return request.  If a seller doesn't respond within the time frame eBay penalizes the seller with a defect and issues a refund to the buyer automatically.

The defect can and usually does affect the seller in several ways...lowering of seller status and increased fees as well as the return counted against the seller performance.

But the buyer is handled quite differently by eBay.

Example...a buyer requests a return claiming item not as described (which is not at all true).  Seller  has limited options and doesn't want to be penalized by eBay so seller accepts the return.

EBay generates a return label that seller will be charged for and the total amount of the refund is "held" in sellers funds.

Buyer is informed and is given 15 days to return the item.

I would think if there is truly a legitimate issue with an item the buyer would want to return it quickly.

Why are buyers allowed so much time to return an item they claim is not as described?

This doesn’t make sense to me!  And to be honest, I feel this policy desperately needs to be changed.  It's completely unfair to the seller and the potential for buyer fraud dramatically increases.

I don't know what we sellers can do to get eBay to revise this policy.

Any suggestions?

Re: Buyer allowed too much time to return item

I don't take returns.

But I do refund people for items lost in the mail and such.

I usually block these people. Have about 300+ block people I think.

Not worth the hassle of returns and paying for return postage.

Its a loss and I just move on.

The buyer protection has gone a bit to far to the buyers.  Just have to add a bit to all your prices to cover such costs.  Common business practice.
