I've posted about four threads on "community", they just get SHUT DOWN with no response.
I'm fed up not being able to do messages; I don't know how the new system works, I'm handicapped and not interested in struggling to make it work. I read conversations on other sites screaming against especially messaging and saying "ebay staff consider all complaints NOISE and ignore them"--what possible reason is there to refuse to just restore the simple useful email-grid format that we enjoyed for 25-30 years?
I'm fed up trying to view "Purchase History" and "Watch List" and other panels, having to wade through all sorts of ADS that I didn't ask for. "SIMILAR PICKS"--there is a button for "view similar", if I wanted to see similar I would click the button. I have to refresh the page with one hand on the WIFI switch trying to shut it off at just the right moment to show the simple pages without "SIMILAR", or "FREQUENTLY-BOUGHT-TOGETHER". The "escape" key is somewhat functional, but I often have to try 5-6 times to get just the right moment.
I'm fed up trying to view an item (or "WATCH LIST"), only to have the screen seized, darkened, and a popup "SAVE $5 IN THE APP"--my ten dollar per month flip cell phone doesn't DO apps, and even if it did I wouldn't want every blasted page seized "SAVE $5".
I'm fed up having to click LINKS; on purchase-history try to see "TRACKING" and it no longer shows the tracking, it shows four movements then forces me to look for and click "SEE MORE"--what possible reason is there to not just show the stupid tracking like it used to? If I want to see an ended item, why do I have to scan the page "THIS-HAS-ENDED-BUT-WE-FOUND-SIMILAR" to find the button "SHOW THE STUPID ITEM I ASKED FOR!!!!!" --- why do I have to ask more than once?
Why can't I opt out of "YOU-MAY-ALSO-LIKE", and "PICKS-FOR-YOU", and the two purchase completion popups "HOW-ABOUT-THIS-TURNIP-TWADDLER---CLICK-PAY-AND-ITS-YOURS!"
Someone in ebay heirarchy thinks it's PROFITABLE to have fifty sales people outside of our doors screaming "BUY-THIS! BUY THIS! BUY THIS!" --- which is what "found-similar", and "frequently-bought-together", and "picks-for-you", and "you-may-also-like" do. We are the customers, the revenue source for ebay---why can't we have it like we want, better as it used to be? Put it back.
Will someone please tell us, the customers (per Business 101 we customers ARE THE BOSS), how we can have ebay the way we want, the way it used to be? No don't say "Just stop using ebay", the other sites (like Yahoo Auctions) have been run out of business.
Instead of just closing a thread with further "nasty belligerent attitude" (ignoring valid complaints calling them "NOISE"), please advise what RECOURSE we have against "staff nasty belligerent attitude"???

Thank you very much -- on the other thread it says:
>If you are using a desktop browser that supports ad blocking with
>custom rules, try adding the following to your ad blocker's rules:
I click on the extensions icon, on uBlock Origin I click the three dots, select "options"--and there is a table to enter filters. I add the string cited above, but the only thing that happens is that string ceases to be displayed.
Where do I enter the string?
I really appreciate your help.

In my version of uBlock Origin, I click on the gear icon, which takes me to the to the Settings. From there go to the "My Filters" section, enable custom filters if that option is not already checked, then paste the rule into the large, numbered field and "Apply changes".

I entered the recommended string for "frequently-bought-together", and it does seem that the annoying rows are missing from "Purchase History", I'm very pleased.
But "Watch List" still has annoying rows of "Shop Similar". There's a thread discussing how hard it is to manage watch list with all the spam: https://community.ebay.com/t5/Buying/eBay-sure-ruined-the-Watch-List-with-this-quot-Shop-similar-quo...
They say the blocker removes them, but they don't tell exactly what to enter to block the "shop similar". A moment ago there was a "block" link in the extension dropdown menu, but it's gone; sorry to be so illiterate.

My "feedback left for others"? What does it tell you?
02-11-2025 09:46 PM
I don't have a gear icon---only the PIN, and three dots. But I clicked the three dots, options, my-filters, and switched on "Enable Custom Filters". Then tried to reload Watch List---I can see it struggling to bloat the page with "VIEW-SIMILAR" rows, then they disappear, as if uBlock is shutting them off. Hopefully the problem is resolved.
My back is really really hurting from sitting here trying to resolve "Frequently" and "Similar" (handicapped, artificial disk). when I was in high school computers were new, they came with 1k to 2k of memory. In college you could by a TI-99 with 16k memory, expandable to 32k. There was no WINDOWS, no EXCEL, no WORD. It is unconscionable that ebay imposes html programming that can be defeated, but requires hours of sitting here getting advice from those who have TAKEN html programming courses. This exposes a "FORGET-YOU" attitude by staff and site programmers; if they were responsive to our needs, they would have an interface which allowed "OPT OUT" selections.
I very much appreciate the help you guys have given here; now I need to go lay down and ease the aching back. (I refuse to take hydro-codone [Lortab], they make the room spin for me...)

If the "Shop similar" rows appear in your Watch List, try adding the following rule for that:
www.ebay.com##.stream-slot
In my version of uBlock Origin, I can create custom rules on a page by using the lightning bolt ("zapper") icon to open up a point and click interface that allows me to highlight a page element, then use a couple of sliders to refine the rule so it applies more or less generally to elements on the page or site. With a little trial and error practice, many different distractions and annoyances can be removed, not just ads.

None of your original threads are locked. I am on the mentor board and read your original posts. You are not asking any questions to answer. Rants have no answers. Ask an intelligible question that we can answer. We can't help with what used to be.

Yes I was asking a question---what are we supposed to do when the site works the way we want (for nearly thirty years), then suddenly it's changed into something that's frustrating and far less usable? What is the path to get something changed back, if "tell-us-what-you-think" replies go unanswered? On other sites they discuss things like the "new forced message panel", no one likes it, and several clearly say "ebay just considers complaints noise and ignores them.
Supposedly messages were changed because people asked for the new format; I've never run into anyone to likes it or asked for it. (But thank you for replying...)

>If the "Shop similar" rows appear in your Watch
>List, try adding the following rule for that:
I owe you a steak dinner--it's such a delight looking at "Purchase History" and "Watch List" and not being swamped with sales pitches. The Watch List really fights to try to display them, pops a row with large gray box and four small ones and tries to load items into the boxes, then it goes away. Then after the next item it tries again, over and over, eventually gives up. It appears the ad-blocker is working. It's very nice not having to hit "refresh" five or six times trying to hit "ESCAPE" at just the right time.
I haven't figured out yet how to kill the "SAVE $5 IN THE APP", but I click anywhere on the page or hit the "escape" key and it goes away.
I can only hope that at some point in the future enough people file message complaints that they'll put it back. But I won't hold my breath.

Very glad you found the ad blocking rules useful!
I have grown to rely on ad blockers for lots of things. I found out just how much I relied on them a a couple of years ago when Firefox suddenly stopped allowing add-ons entirely, and I found many sites totally unrecognizable and unusable without all my blocking rules that had accumulated over time. Although Firefox fixed the issue and add-ons were working again by the next day, I had already recreated most of my ad blocking custom rules in another browser rather than wait for the fix.
I have not found a rule that works for the $5 app popup -- it seems to affect me only once in a while, and it is one of those things that goes away when you click anywhere on the page, which makes blocking it very difficult. Perhaps I will experiment with a different browser to see if I can get it to pop up again and then try to take it out. If I figure it out I will follow up here.

We had a mentor meeting and the new messaging was discussed. I can assure you that no many people like the new format. We were told it was to be more like texting and many [young] people like it, so it probably isn't going anywhere.

I must have missed that -- congratulations, you're the first I've heard of.

"No many people like"? You mean not many?
It still remains, why can't the site do both? Why cater to "those-who-like-texting" and infuriate the rest? I dread the day when they remove "SHOW CLASSIC VIEW" for feedbacks, that will make feedbacks completely useless and unusable.
Why can't there be a simple "SHOW-CLASSIC-MESSAGE-VIEW"? It's just a block of html code, it's not like you have to keep adding gasoline every few miles to keep the code running. Does it cost extra for the "SHOW CLASSIC VIEW" for feedbacks? No.
If my project would suddenly take off and generate income (that would happen if I could buy some TV commercials--not yet, I just received the 1099 for last year and my profits are a whopping six bucks!), I would hire a software house to CREATE the "classic view messaging". It's just a browser display issue, proven by what we just managed to do with the ad blocker program. My display has been changed to omit "FREQUENTLY BOUGHT TOGETHER", and "SIMILAR ITEMS". That was a little like putting on sunglasses to filter out offensive colors. When they had "classic messages" it was just some html code that displayed it. Similar code can be written for a browser plugin to rearrange the screen. If it was available now I'd buy it.
