When You Copy and Paste a Message, it Doubles

I copy and paste messages every day to use them as templates and now when I do, every paragraph doubles. I thought someone at ebay should be made aware of this devon@ebay

Thanks.

Might want to put this post in the technical problems section.

Ayup; that would be here:

Note that (1) we're in a three-day weekend that may delay any replies from staff, and (2) as can be seen from other posts in that group, actual replies from eBay are few and far between, but that would be the correct place to post about this problem. (Yes, I noticed it too in some recent messages. It looks to have been happening for at least a week now, maybe two.)

I'm not clear on what you mean by "messages".  If you mean emails, I can't imagine what those could be used as templates for.  And if you mean item descriptions, I can't imagine why you'd call them messages.  Or maybe you mean some totally 'other' thing, IDK.

I have a shipping confirmation message that I send to buyers after I'm back from the post office. (Just a couple of generic lines to let them know that their package has already gone out, and they can see its tracking via eBay.) Thus I don't write it out each time as a fresh message; I just copy-and-paste the thing from the last outbound message in which I used that text.

For the past couple of weeks or so, if I copied a prior message and pasted it into the new message window, every line comes up doubled, requiring a manual cleanup before hitting the Send button:

Thank you! Your package has already gone out. You should be receiving your USPS.com tracking number in your purchase details from eBay. Let me know if you have any questions!

Re: When You Copy and Paste a Message, it Doubles

@gurlcat

Pretty much what @gloryglorygifts said.

I send every buyer when their order is complete a thank you message, when item will be shipped, how it was shipped, any discounts they got, etc., message that includes pictures of their item during packaging and as packaged with the shipping label.

Every. Single. Order.

So I copy/paste my sent messages a lot to simplify it.  But the last couple or so were doing the duplicating thing that @gloryglorygifts was talking about.

*shrug

An example (with the duplication issue):

Hello, thank you for shopping with me and well done! You saved $3.00 by purchasing multiple items!Hello, thank you for shopping with me and well done! It should look like this:

Okay, I took the liberty of creating a new report about this problem over in the Technical Issues group, pinging @gloryglorygifts as an FYI:

Re: When You Copy and Paste a Message, it Doubles

Users have been reporting problems copying from an existing message with one buyer and pasting into a new message with a different buyer.

If you're constantly copy/pasting the same message, you should store it on a Notepad file PC or TextEdit file Mac (format to "plain text" in the menu options). Copy paste from that clean file, not from another message. That's best practice to avoid issues with all kinds of code being copied from rich text sources.

For whatever it's worth, as a buyer it annoys me when sellers send messages to say they shipped. eBay does that automatically and eBay includes the tracking number, too. I don't need my inbox filled with duplicate messages. My inbox is full enough as it is.

That said, if a seller has a reason to reach out - like maybe the package was delayed and they want to let me know they filed an inquiry with the carrier - that's fine.

Just throwing that opinion out there. Everybody has their own preferences so do what works for your business.

Anybody who wants to file a tech report that will be seen by eBay can click the ? icon on the bottom right of the page. It's fast, easy, and the product developers do review those reports.

Re: When You Copy and Paste a Message, it Doubles

@wastingtime101

I have had mostly positive feedback regarding them, and its more than just a simple shipping notification.  Note I don't ask for feedback or anything else.  Its a thank you first and foremost, and a reassurance of their item being packaged properly for shipment.

As I said, I also include pictures as well.   Sure, not everyone is going to appreciate feedback like that, but again, no one has specifically complained either.  But many have replied with positive feedback directly to those sent messages. So I will continue to do them.

As for the whole notepad thing.  I didn't bother, because whether I grabbed it from a previous message or from a file, it was the same work.  But now, with the bug I may need to do that, to get around the duplication thing.

That's great @gator08041971 - as I said above, if it works for your business, keep doing it. Obviously your customers want that extra level of contact. 🙂
