Scam advertisement.

There is an advertisement that keeps appearing on eBay pages showing an envelope and offering a gift. When you click on it, it invites you to answer some trivial questions and then play a pot luck selection game. You win it after a couple of goes and are told you’ve won an iPhone for a fee of £1.

To pay the pound you submit credit card details and are promised delivery in 4 - 5 days.

Of course that’s the last you hear and no gift arrives.

This looks like a scam to steal credit card details. Why is eBay allowing this on its site?

Although eBay does allow some third-party banner ads, typically eBay does not permit any pop-up ads on the site.

Your device may have adware or malware installed on it, or you may be subject to a browser hijacking. Often such "ads" may be triggered by going to certain popular sites such as eBay or Yahoo, though the ads are not delivered by those sites or connected to those sites.

Try scanning your device with something like adwcleaner from malwarebytes and clearing your browser history. If the scam ad continues to appear, see if using a different browser prevents that. Some browsers are more susceptible to certain kinds of redirector scams than others.

You may want to consider installing an ad blocker if you use a desktop browser, or using an ad blocking mobile browser.

@virgschri_6

Unless you made a purchase through ebay.com, eBay was not involved.

If you gave your credit card number to a scammer, you need to contact your card issuer and dispute the charge, get the old card number canceled and get a new card number and card issued.
