I had filed a sales tax exemption certificate for resale over 2 years ago & have never been charged tax. Now as of this week it's no longer working and every item is charging me sales tax.
Also have heard from others that a number of items that are supposed to be nontaxable are no longer being correctly made exempt in the coins & paper money category.
I think we all know the sales tax collection on here is a trainwreck but please take a look into this. Thanks

Do you have more than one eBay account? Or ship to a different address?
Did your exemption certificate/paperwork expire?

Yeah I have more than one account but it isn't working on the one I applied on that it has always worked on, same address and there's no reference to an expiration anywhere on the certificate. If eBay puts an expiration on the exemption, then that's something I've not heard of. When I called they said it was just a glitch and to reapply for exemption. Still very dumb considering I had already done it

There are different kinds of exemptions, and each state has different rules, so anything is possible. In my state, certain types of exemption certificates are valid for ten years and require renewal or re-issue.
That said, it sounds like this may have been a technical glitch on eBay's part rather than an eBay imposed expiration or policy.

Yeah probably just another eBay glitch. No shortage of those. Maybe someone important will take a look at these forums some day and get the sales tax department to get it together, or hire more. I can only imagine how many times a day they process refunds for sales tax being incorrectly collected instead of just fixing the base issue.

I think you'd probably do better to either call/contact ebay yourself or go to the Ebay for Business Facebook Page and explain it in a message to them......

Yeah I already did as I said. But no one there has the authority to do anything about it anyways. They just pass on the info. Just posting it here as well

I’m a coin dealer as well and noticed this today. I’m out of town and can’t reapply till Monday or Tuesday, so it’s either quit buying this weekend or message every seller asking for patience. Annoying!

The point of sale is also the state you reside in, so if items are tax exempt such as coins in your state, then there should be no sales tax exemption even needed to filed.

You can also expect for your customers who live in states that have no sales tax on coins and or bullion to be charged sales tax when purchasing from you, even though that is unlawful collection. Definitely impacting coin sales with the broken software.

Thanks for the update. I saw this happen to me this weekend as well

For what it's worth @allegiance-rare-coins , refiling the sales tax exemption and getting eBay to update it did not fix the issue for me. Still shows sales tax on any coins I'm purchasing. When I further followed up with them they said it is a known glitch that the San Jose office is working on. Hopefully it's resolved soon.
