Need to "verify" self to enter site?? Is this new?

I've been a member of eBay for years.  Today when I tried to sign in, the site asked me to "verify".

The verification is a stupid thing...sliding a piece of puzzle into the right slot.

Is this something new or has the site been hacked?

So far I haven't encountered that on the main site, but I did for the first time about two days ago when launching TurboLister. It was the first time I'd had that particular type of verification related to eBay.

Here's another recent post about it that you might find helpful:

Thanks for the link. The verification is really dumb....sliding a puzzle piece?? I am reassured that the site was not hacked but amazed again at the ineptitude of their programers.

Yeah - really dumb. Why can't they just use a Yes or No? I mean, something that a nefarious bot could do without proving they are human.............................................

I had this happen to me too.  I thought it was a bit strange.  I was listing multiple items yesterday and every few listings I'd have to re-verify myself.  In addition to the sliding puzzle piece though, they made me re-sign into my account before I could post the listing.

I've been on eBay since August 2000.
This started for me a little over a week ago.
Every morning when I logged into one of my eBay accounts, I had to do this.
Today was the first day I didn't have to do it.

I got hacked a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure of the hackers' point of entry, but they changed my email address and/or password on a number of online retailers' accounts, including eBay, Amazon, Walmart, Facebook, and a gaming site I use. They managed to make two purchases with my debit card on Walmart's site.

I will never again complain about any site requiring me to verify anything.

It's certainly not consistent, I have the same experience. If ebay wanted more security then they would require it every time, not just sometimes, as much as I don't like it anytime.  The oddity is having to verify my account the same way in order to log out! That's just crazy.

That's terrible. How would they hack into all those separate accounts? Are you using the same password for different accounts? Sounds very serious, like identity theft.

If you are using internet explorer you should use a different browser.

Thanks for all your replies.

I was not bothered by the need to verify.  I just wanted to make sure this was legitimate since I had not encountered it before and did not catch an announcement that this would be put in place.
