Auto Pay linked to Best Offers is a terrible idea, and the fact that eBay didn't communicate the change is worse for Buyers and Sellers.
It makes combined shipping more complicated for the seller. If a BUYER wants to buy more than one item of mine, their knowing that combined shipping will be a matter they'll have to bring up with the seller because of the new Auto Pay, they might not bother with buying more from my store. Lost revenue. I recently had to go back-and-forth with a seller on figuring out how to deal with this. They didn't have much experience on issuing refunds, which is fine. We worked it out, but it took time. Some Buyers might not be as patient. And some sellers might not issue refunds on the extra shipping.
This Auto-Pay feature is complicating how Buyers submit an offer. It's a terrible idea. I've been on eBay 17 years, and the previous method of submitting offers worked smoothly: the offer is 1. Rejected; 2. Considered then countered; 3. Accepted, then the Seller and Buyer work out payment and payment scheduling.
Auto-Pay Best Offer submissions also FORCE a buyer to IMMEDIATELY pay for an item, even if a seller doesn't require it. I give my buyers five days to pay. Some sellers give 2-3 days. I've found this PAYMENT WINDOW gives a Buyer less of a sense of urgency, so maybe they'll shop more. Auto-Pay overrides that, so a customer who needs that extra time to pay doesn't have it. Auto-Pay Best Offers are violating are own store payment terms.
We could be losing sales. Losing customers. Ebay is intent on complicating their platform. I don't know why, either. If you and I are losing sales, eBay is losing money.

You can't as a buyer

NOT AT ALL helpful for sellers who regularly sell multiple, small priced items and invoice for "combined ship" after the auctions have closed. Some run three to five days consecutively and will combine ship at the end of the weeks auctions. Buyers will wind up spending huge amounts for excess shipping charges, as refunding the shipping cost is a major hassle for sellers. Many sellers refused to do so in the past and have insisted on waiting to pay until bidding was over to get a combined shipping invoice.

@lyful35
It is not the fault of the seller. They are probably just as surprised as the buyer!
This is a new thing for auctions, implemented within the last 10 days, or less. There may be certain sellers that were opted in, maybe certain buyers also.
Complaints just started a few days ago.

Just confirmed that Auto pay does not use your PayPal preferred payment; it used bank account debit only.
I have only one credit card in PayPal and it’s checked as my preferred payment method.
Just had two offers accepted and they paid immediately and both from
my checking account.
No notice of this policy change, no notice the bank account would be used. They just do it.
20+ year buyer with several thousand transactions. This is illegal and needs to be stopped.

I have been on ebay 23 years and this is the worst piece of garbage I have seen. Had to deal with one buyer only and he turned into a donkey because I didn`t know how to do this. Needless to say I won`t and happy I won`t hear from him again
I am here now trying to find out how to bypass this for other buyers

You can't remove as a buyer which stinks- I hate it! But you can remove the immediate pay option on items you are selling.

Was just caught off guard by this change with an offer I made today. As a buyer of 15+ years on Ebay with a 100% satisfactory and comments of being a buyer that pays promptly, I can say I do not like the change. The fact that as a buyer I do not have an option to turn this off, or an option on where the payment is charged to from the payment method of my choice, I can say that going forward this will surely effect my buying habits on ebay ......and not in a positive way.

Thanks for the guidance. I did not even know they did this until one of recurring customers asked why he had to commit a payment method before he even made an offer. I think this is definitely something Ebay should have let the sellers decide themselves

Yeah. This just happened to me as I was unaware that Ebay was doing this -- I'm **bleep**. I feel like I'm being scammed -- like Ebay now has access to charge my credit card 'at will' and I have no say in the matter! I hadn't purchased anything in a long while on Ebay and just learned "THE HARD WAY" that Ebay made this change WITHOUT ASKING ME IF I WANTED TO PARTICIPATE -- I WOULD HAVE SAID, "NO THANK YOU!"
I'm NO LONGER going to make any OFFERS to sellers and I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY BEST OFFERS EITHER from any sellers!
There's NO WAY IN HeII that Ebay is going to have complete control over my credit card !!!! They can take their "Automatic Payment" and shove it !! I'm going to decide >>> WHEN I PAY <<<. Ebay has NO RIGHT TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY CREDIT CARD !!! >>> THAT'S ILLEGAL !!! <<< I was NEVER NOTIFIED by Ebay about this 'requirement', because I would have said, NO THANKS !!
Ebay has NO RIGHT to take complete control of my Credit Card !!! THAT'S ILLEGAL !!! And BTW Ebay, I'm a very good 100% Positive Feedback PAYING CUSTOMER and I always pay right away -- BUT IT'S 'ME' WHO MAKES THAT DECISION -- YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE CONTROL OVER MY 'CREDIT' OR MY 'CREDIT CARD' !! I'm very upset over this ( in case you can't tell?) !!!

As a buyer on Ebay -- I'm NO LONGER making any offers to sellers and I'm NO LONGER accepting any 'Best Offers' given to me by sellers.
Ebay! Sorry, but you're not taking control of MY CREDIT or my CREDIT CARD !!
It will probably be a long time before I buy anything again on Ebay. It's ILLEGAL for Ebay to be taking control of a buyer's credit and control of their credit card to make these 'automatic payments' !! It's ILLEGAL !!

Yea this sucks.
As predominately a buyer haven’t sold anything. This is just not fair.
my situation:
I won a bid on a 70” 4k TV. I paid. The seller then contacts me that he out the wrong dimensions in on eBay so that means that he has to cancel the order and I purchase it again.
so I told him to add the offer feature. I was planning to pay when the refund came 3-5 days as he said he won’t be able to ship until next week. However, I was amazed that it took the money out right away.
what if I didn’t have the money in my account to repurchase it. Someone else could’ve bid on the TV or sent a higher offer and I would've been out of my item.
I see that seller can turn this off but there’s no way for the buyer to battle against this as this account has bought close to a thousand things of ebay since 2014.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO >>> REMOVE <<< >>> AUTOMATIC PAYMENT << >> AS A BUYER ??
WHERE DID YOU GO TO "TURN OFF" AUTOMATIC PAYMENT AS A BUYER??
08-06-2023 06:10 AM
@ slippinjimmy: You AND Ebay can take your automatic payment scheme AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR **BLEEPS** !!! Who do you think YOU ARE Ebay to take MY Credit Card away from MY control and use it to make any kind of payment ??!!!!!!! It's >> ILLEGAL << for you to take control of MY CREDIT CARD and use it to pay FOR ANYTHING !!! You have NO BUSINESS using MY CREDIT OR MY CREDIT CARD ... PERIOD !!! Your name IS NOT on my credit card account and your UNAUTHORIZED USE of my credit card >>> IS FRAUD <<< AND >>> IDENTITY THEFT <<< !!
EBAY -- YOU NEED TO STOP THIS BECAUSE I'M PRETTY SURE THAT IT CAN BE REPORTED AS "IDENTITY THEFT" AND THE "FRAUDULENT USE" OF SOMEONE'S CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT!!!
I have a relative who's an attorney and I'm going to ask him if what you're doing is EVEN LEGAL ?!!! And, I think he's going to say "NO. It's NOT legal" !!

I just found out about the new auto-pay requirement and that eBay had designated one of my credit cards as my future method of automatic payments for all purchases. I did not sign anything giving eBay permission to do that. My contract for accruing charges on that card is with my credit card company, NOT with eBay. I am a 20-year buyer with 100% positive feedback on nearly 2,000 transactions. I always pay promptly, and I resent being treated as if I am going to default on an auction purchase. Ebay, please end this insulting experiment or allow buyers to search for auctions that do not require us to give you auto-access to our finances!

I canceled ebay over this. This is sneaky and creepy to take money out of my account directly. I asked ebay customer service to remove this payment method and they pointed me to my payment methods. I see nothing to indicate I authorized automatic payments from my checking in my ebay account information. It's a shame ebay is doing this. I'm talking from a buyer's perspective but I can see sellers taking a hit over this even more so. I have a good relationship with many of the sellers I make offers with, they know I'm good for payment - ebay needs better AI to understand who the deadbeats are and are not. Until then, BYE!
